PORTLAND, Maine -- A 22-year-old Maine woman who advertised as an escort on Craigslist and traveled regularly to New York has been missing for nearly two weeks, police said.

Megan Waterman, of Scarborough, went to New York late last month with her boyfriend and was last heard from on the night of June 5.

PORTLAND — A candlelight vigil will be held for a missing Scarborough woman Friday.

Megan Waterman, 22, was last seen early this month on New York's Long Island. Her family is alarmed because she normally would be in touch with her young daughter a few times each day when she was away.

The vigil will begin at 7 p.m. in the bandstand area of Congress Square on Congress Street, next to the Eastland Park Hotel.

On Saturday morning, volunteers will be gathering at the Scarborough Walmart parking lot at 100 Gallery Blvd. Volunteers will be asked to distribute missing posters in the area. Balloons with small versions of the poster will be launched. The event begins at 8:30 a.m.

More information about the events is available at www.meganwaterman.com.

Police believe Waterman worked as an escort and that she may have been in Long Island for that reason. She has not been in touch with friends or family since the weekend of June 5, when she was staying at the Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge, N.Y.

Scarborough Detective Don Blatchford said today that police continue to investigate but that there have been no sightings of Waterman.

Anyone with information that could help locate Waterman is asked to call Scarborough police at 883-6361 or their anonymous tip line at 730-4200, ext. 3093.

Lorraine Ela said she met a lot of nice people in New York last Saturday as she helped alert them about her missing daughter.

Yet after 350 posters with Megan Waterman’s face and description and 50 smaller cards attached to balloons were distributed in Hauppage, the Long Island town where she was last seen, the 22-year-old Scarborough woman remains missing.

Boyfriend of missing woman arrested on trafficking charge
By Ann S. Kim akim@mainetoday.com

SOUTH PORTLAND — A Brooklyn, N.Y., man faces charges of unlawful trafficking in cocaine base and violating conditions of release.

Akeem Cruz, 20, was arrested Tuesday after authorities received complaints of suspected drug trafficking from a South Portland motel room, according to the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.

We were successful in getting the family on the Jane Velez Mitchell Show and hopefully the taped episode that was on last night will be available online. Hopefully someone in NY can come forward and tell where Megan is. We strongly believe she has been trafficked. Also, there is the possibility that Akeem is responsible for something happening to Megan. She walked out of the hotel with him at 8:00 pm. Came back solo at 8:30 pm. Around 1:30 am she spoke with him on her cell phone and then walked out of the hotel solo to never be seen again. Did he ask her to come out and that he was waiting for her in parking lot away from camera views? That is the real question. Police still call him a "witness" and not a suspect.
