* The victim was discovered on May 13, 1983 in New Caney, Montgomery County, Texas.
* Estimated Date of Death: Unknown
* State of Remains: Decomposed
* Cause of Death: Homicide/Blunt force trauma

Vital Statistics

* Estimated age: 15-22 years old.
* Approximate Height and Weight: Height estimated at 59" or 4'11". Weight measured at 78 lbs. (decomposed).
* Distinguishing Characteristics: Dark brown hair approximately 7" in length. Eye color is unknown.
* Clothing: "Shades" designer blue jeans, a tan "Wrangler" long-sleeve terry cloth t-shirt, and white panties.
* Dentals: Unknown.
* DNA: Sample submitted.
* Fingerprints: Unknown.

Case History
At approximately 7:35 a.m., Montgomery County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a wooded area behind the 76 Truck Stop on Highway 59 at FM 1485 where schoolchildren had found the decomposing body of an unidentified white female. The location of the body was positioned in an area where tractor-trailers normally parked. An autopsy revealed that she had been killed by two blows to the head, which resulted in skull fractures.

* Her height (4'11") is a perfect match.
* Her hair length (7") and color (Lt Brown) match.
* Her DLC (May 4, 1983) is 11 days prior to the discovery of the remains (May 13, 1983)
* The UID was found in a truck stop about 420 miles by way of a fairly direct route straight south of the location from which she disappeared.
 
Wow! I think it's definitely a good possibility. You should call this in. I live in Texas and have a hard time believing that anyone would jump off I45 to go to a truck stop in New Caney (on 59) but I suppose anything is possible. The other things match up too well.

I just left a message with Montgomery County Sheriff's office (Det. DuVoy).

Normally TX DPS is the call-in number on Texas cases, but this is the number that was provided in the DoeNet page, so I'll go to it first.

Mindi Chambers may also warrant a look. Odd circumstances with her father seeming to be a very evil human being. Now 900+ miles seperates Mesa from New Caney; however considering Mesa is only 8 miles from I-10 which intersects Rte 59 (only approx 25 miles to the truckstop from there)...it may be worth a shot. I'm digging to see what her daddy did for a living...HOLY ****; he was a long-haul trucker!

Now with the UID info say her DNA has been submitted; does that mean it isn't in CODIS quite yet? Good news w/ Mindi...if it is a match her DNA is in CODIS so I guess we can play the waiting game...

Authorities are very confident that Mindi Chambers is probably the Jane Doe profiled in the link below, but they are unable to prove it because she has no remaining living maternal relatives, and her dental records have been lost.

I got chills when I read the article Carl; so is Mindi's DNA on file or did I read something wrong on the Doe link? And the Jane Doe has a sample submitted? So we just wait for the results? Or I am just too wound up and completely off base? I see that you posted another case, very similar details...so wow! This is interesting...the other case you posted has DNA listed too, so If Mindi's is on file then wouldn't a match proved the identity already?
 
The article mistakenly says that a DNA sample from a paternal relative would tell for sure. In fact, it is a maternal relative that they would need to locate. Her mother died when she was 2, and the half-sister and aunt are from the father's side of the family. That is useless for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) testing.

There is a Nuclear DNA sample on file from the paternal side, but they can only obtain Nuclear DNA from body fluids or soft tissue. Since only bones were found, they would need to verify via mtDNA. This type of testing evaluates only the maternal lineage.

If they could locate and exhume the remains of her mother (assuming that she was buried, and not cremated), the possible match could be resolved. But there are no plans to do that.

To be clear, by "this jane doe", I meant the one shown in in the link that I provided, not the jane doe that is the subject of this thread. I revised my comment above replacing "this jane doe" with "the Jane Doe profiled in the link below" .

I suspect that since we went a bit off-topic (my fault :doh:), my comments may have been misinterpreted. So to recap: the jane doe in the links below is the subject of this thread (Not 72UFTX).

I have a slight problem with this match - maybe someone can help out.

Melody weighed 135 - 140lbs, which is quite a solid build for someone at that height. The Doe was measured at 78lbs - obviously less than a living weight due to decomposition.

Could Melody have lost 40% of her body weight in no more than 9 days after death?

I don't think that's inconceivable. She was left in a wooded area which should have plenty of animals and insects around. They can easily consume 40% of a corpse in 9 days. (Oops :doh:, I erred in my post above saying that it was 11 days) .

ETA: I wish they would have provided clothing sizes so that we could decide for ourselves whether that's reasonable.

I just spoke with Kristin Fabry of TX DPS. Melody Ann Jones is not on her rule-out list for this case, so she will contact the Montgomery County Sheriff, and ask them to look into it.

She advised to check back in two or three weeks to follow-up.
 
A couple of long shots; but doing a quick search for woman between 4'0-5'0 weighing between 70-200lbs yielded two possibilities. One may be too long gone (1978) and the other too young....but nonetheless...both would have to either needed ties to TX or picked up by a long-haul trucker similar to Mindi Chambers father...

Interesting note about CINDA LEANN PALLETT; she was last seen with a friend at the Oklahoma State Fairgrounds who is also missing. Traveling carnival, truckers, etc....

I'm not 100% sold either.

Info about Cinda's case can be found here...literally...The deceased man who was convicted MAY have dumped Cinda in one spot and her friend in another. Both women are "tiny"- 5'0 88-100 lbs respectively...

I spoke with Kristin Fabry of TX-DPS regarding the status of this submission (Melody Ann Jones).

She said that OK authorities are just beginning the process of collecting DNA Family Reference Samples. Considering the backlog at UNT, this will probably be at least a six-month wait for an answer on this one.
 
WOW. i was skimming threw the forums and New Caney caught my eye. I grew up in this area. I remember when this girl was found behind the 76 truck stop I was 6. I remember because it's a small town and things like this just didn't happen out here. Hwy 59 is a heavily traveled road for long haul truckers. I deal with them every day. The truck stop was very busy back in the day. The intermediate school sits caddy corner behind it. The truck stop has been closed down for years. They had problems with drugs there.
It is now the site of road construction crews as they area expanding hwy59 to 6 lanes.

Montgomery county just closed down their ME office due to lack of funds and everything is now sent to Dallas (which isn't even close). So I wonder where they will be doing the work on this case?

Dont know if this infomation helps any just thought I'd give a local view of the place.
