MYTH BUSTERS

*LIST ONLY *

* NO DISCUSSION PLEASE *

Some information is posted as fact, when it is not. There have been errors in reporting, particularly in the early days of the case, and rumors across the internet have proliferated.

This is a reference thread to document information that is blatantly false or unsubstantiated that keeps getting posted. You can link back to posts in this thread, and you'll have the links to substantiate the accurate information.

When you list a misconception as true/false, you MUST provide a link to a credible MSM source to substantiate the accurate information that 'busts' it.

Please do not link to rumors, or copy/paste things like comments on news articles or info in blogs. Just state that it is a rumor that started on the net.

Please do not challenge 'busts' on this thread, but instead, discuss them on the appropriate related forum threads.

If information is found to challenge a link or information, please PM a mod (Kimster, Grandmaj, JBean) with the challenge information and links so they can do a fact check, and correct the 'bust' if appropriate.

Myth: Kyron left his backpack and coat/jacket at the school.

This internet rumor was started by an anonymous person who left a comment on a news article. The person claimed to be Kyron's aunt.

Bust: There has never been any information come out to substantiate Kyron left his backpack and/or jacket at the school.

Myth: Baby K was with a babysitter or at a daycare on the morning of Kyron's disappearance.

This rumor was started on the internet, unknown how.

Bust: Kaine stated in an interview on July 9 that Baby K was with Terri at the school.

Reporter: Kaine, I have to ask, K, on the morning that Kyron went missing - was she at home or was she at daycare or where was she at?

Kaine: She was with Terri.

Reporter: With Terri.

Kaine: Yeah.

Reporter: Was she with Terri at the school, or (unintellible)?

Kaine: Yes.

Myth: Two teachers saw Terri and Kyron leave the school together.

There is no direct quote, but here is the June 5 news article statement that started this myth:

Portland Public Schools spokesman Matt Shelby said two teachers saw Kyron with his stepmother and thought the two left school together.

http://www.king5.com/news/local/NW-Portland-second-grader-still-missing-Saturday-95689114.html

Bust: The school representative said only that two teachers *thought* Terri and Kyron had left the school together. No school rep has ever said anyone ever saw them leave together.

There is also this news article statement from an ABC Good Morning America interview with Matt Shelby from June 7 that says no school official saw them together other than in a classroom earlier in the morning:

The last school official to see the boy put him in the classroom earlier that morning showing off his project. No school official saw him after that.

Myth: Terri called across the gym in the school that Kyron had an appointment on the morning of Kyron's disappearance.

This internet rumor was started by an anonymous person who left a comment on a news article.

Bust: There has never been any information come out to substantiate that Terri was ever even in the gym.

The only information that has come out about the appointment, does not include any references to being in the gym, or calling out across the gym, and in fact the information is that Terri told the teacher about the appointment the day before Kyron's disappearance.

Here is the article about the appointment, with information not from Terri, but from a friend of Terri:

Finster said Horman had told Kyron's teacher the day before that she was taking the boy to the doctor on Friday, June 11, and gave the teacher paperwork to fill out related to the appointment.

Finster said that when Kyron didn't show up at the bus the afternoon of June 4, Horman talked to the teacher who said she thought that Horman had taken Kyron to the doctor that day. Horman told Finster that the child's teacher was new, in her first year of teaching, and was hard of hearing in one ear. "She doesn't know if she understood her," Finster said.

and this from Kaine:

Q: Was Kyron supposed to be out of school the following Friday for a doctor’s appt.?
A: KAINE – There was some discussion about the appointment but it was unknown exactly when the appointment was scheduled so we cannot comment for certain.

Myth: Terri emailed the teacher in the afternoon to ask about picking up the science fair project.

This internet rumor was started by an anonymous person who left a comment on a news article.

Bust: There has never been any information come out to substantiate that Terri ever emailed the teacher.

Regarding Kyron's backpack and jacket possibly being found (Kimster agreed that this might be significant):
http://www.kgw.com/home/Police-display-outfit-last-worn-by-Kyron-Horman-96171334.html

The information police gave about his outfit does not include anything about his jacket and backpack. They publish photographs of replicas of his clothing and glasses and describe his socks even but not a beep about backpack or jacket, although people making Kyron sightings might be more likely to notice a jacket or a backpack than socks or shoes. You can see them farther away and they may be more distinctive. The omission makes sense if you assume that the backpack and jacket were not missing at the time.

(However, there are other places besides the classroom that they could have been.)

another myth is that the teacher was new. This was at least her second year at Skyline as per the website at the school.

Bust: Teacher (Miss Porter) posts on school blog as early as September 2008:

Myth: Items of Kyron's, such as his glasses, have been found.

This myth started as an internet rumor.

Bust: The sheriff's office reported on July 22, 2010 that no items of Kyron's have been found.

Link:

Staton said investigators have not found any items that belong to Kyron, and again declined to name the stepmother, Terri Moulton Horman, as a person of interest in the investigation.

Myth: Vehicles of various types and colors (red car, white truck, blue explorer) were seen on June 4 on Sauvie Island.

These are internet rumors, and there are variations in the number and type of vehicles seen. For example, sometimes it's just one vehicle, sometimes it's a red car and a white truck, sometimes it's two white trucks, sometimes they are parked, sometimes they are driving at normal speed, sometimes they are driving at a high rate of speed, sometimes they are driven by Terri, sometimes by a red haired woman, sometimes the driver is not clearly seen (sometimes vaguely 'a man', sometimes vaguely 'a woman').

Often, the internet rumors in this case begin, and can be traced, to someone speculating, expressing an idea, somewhere on the internet. The speculation, thought, idea gets repeated over and over, stated as fact, carried from site to site, until some people believe it is a true fact.

Bust: Mainstream media has never reported even a single vehicle from these rumors actually being seen on Sauvie Island on June 4.

Myths and Busts change over time as new information is published. If you find information in the media that changes a myth or bust, please send the media link to Kimster or Grandmaj so they can review it and change the Myth or Bust as appropriate.

It is necessary to send the link to them, because the posts in this thread can only be edited by a mod since the Edit button disappears after 24 hours.

MYTH: The sexting between Terri and the Landscaper or Terri and Michael Cook never happened or wasn't confirmed by LE

But this is busted by the official court records about the restraining order against Terri.

See the last two paragraphs and especially the last line in the image below. Phone records, texts, and images were "provided by LE" to the judge who viewed them "in camera" or in his chambers.

This is true, not a fabrication of Kaine Horman or the media.

True (according to Terri): “The teacher thought I said I was going to take Kyron with Kitty for a doctor’s appt.,” she wrote on June 5, 2010. “I said I was going to look at other exhibits - how do you mess that up? His coat and backpack were still at school."
