Wall of Hope gone from Skyline School
Story Published: Aug 30, 2010 at 1:35 PM PDT

Even with firefighters using bolt cutters, the chain-link fence didn't come down without a small fight. However, it did come down – in four pieces.

Volunteers held onto the "Wall of Hope" as it was cut. Then they walked each piece in a procession less than half-a-mile down Skyline Boulevard to the wall's new home at the Tualatin Valley Fire and Rescue station.

Kyron's parents weren't far behind.

Kyron's Wall of Hope moved to nearby firehouse
Posted on August 30, 2010 at 2:10 PM

Parents and school officials were concerned about the memorial being up when the school year starts, especially its emotional impact on students.

Kyron was last seen at the school on June 4. No suspects have been named in his diappearance.

Meanwhile, Portland Public Schools spokesman Matt Shelby said Saturday that security cameras will be in place at Skyline School before classes begin Sept. 7.

Kyron’s memory and the need to remind people that he is still missing remains important, according to the family, but so is the need to do everything possible to make the start of school as normal for the students going there.

There is also a concern that an ongoing presence of strangers coming to the wall might also fuel safety fears in students.

UPDATED: 4:38 pm PDT August 30, 2010

Surveillance cameras were installed over the weekend at the school where 7-year-old Kyron Horman disappeared, district officials said.

A Portland Public Schools spokesman said Chown Hardware in northwest Portland donated the system for Skyline Elementary School.

There is a camera placed inside the school's main hallway, in addition to several cameras outside the school, school officials said.

Video system at Kyron Horman's Skyline School will set benchmark for other Portland schools

Skyline School in Northwest Portland, where Kyron Horman was last seen, has been outfitted with a state-of-art video surveillance system that sets a new standard for Portland Public Schools.

"Skyline now has the most comprehensive video surveillance in the district," said Matt Shelby, spokesman for Portland Public Schools.

Before Kyron disappeared June 4, the brick school in rural Portland had no surveillance system -- like other schools in the district. Now it has cameras panning the exterior and one camera inside in the main hall, Shelby said.
