KSDK -- A mother and her boyfriend are accused of killing her three-year-old son and are each being held on a $2 million bond.

Clinton County State's Attorney John Hudspeth charged Valerie J. Schoolfield, 27, and Scott P. Endicott, 22, with first-degree murder.

Investigators took Schoolfield and Endicott into custody Thursday night in the death of Joseph M. Schoolfield.

Clinton County Public Defender Stewart Freeman says Scott Endicott is not the only person who could have inflicted the injuries that caused the death of three-year-old Joseph Schoolfield. In his opening statement at Endicott's murder trial Friday morning, Freeman noted there was evidence the young boy had been abused before his mother, Valerie Schoolfield, began dating Endicott in 2008. Schoolfield is also charged with murder, but will be tried separately.

Another case of an abused child reunited with his family and then murdered. When is CPS going to learn?

Judge denies Endicott's bid to withdraw guilty plea in boy's beating death

CARLYLE -- A Clinton County judge denied a request to withdraw the guilty plea of man who admitted to the fatal beating a 3-year-old boy.

After three days of trial in July, Scott Endicott, 24, entered an Alford plea, which means a defendant doesn't admit guilt but acknowledges that prosecutors have enough evidence for a conviction. Endicott faced the death penalty, but Clinton County State's Attorney John Hudspeth decided days before trial to withdraw capital punishment as a possibility if Endicott was convicted.

Man says he was coerced into pleading guilty in boy's beating death

CARLYLE -- It was a surprise to some when Scott Endicott entered a guilty plea in the middle of his trial last month for the murder of 3-year-old Joseph Schoolfield.

Now, Endicott wants to take it back.

"The defendant did not voluntarily and knowingly enter the plea," stated a motion filed by Endicott on Wednesday. "Defendant was coerced into entering the plea."

Makes me get tearful to think of this poor baby. It wouldn't bother me at all to see both of these adults die in prison for this.

Thanks idiot judge..........for sending him right back to where he got abused.

You knew he was abused and you sent him back.........and now he is dead.

she deserves more than 16 years but I guess I'm grateful she even got that. this turns my stomach. "I'm sorry I failed as a mother" yeah, you're sorry you got caught. what you actually failed at was as a human being.

Thank goodness for text messages. The audacity and lack of concern for your own child. "Make it look like he slept in the top bunk". What kind of mom does that?

Michael Althoff, a defense psychologist, said Schoolfield couldn't believe Endicott would harm Joseph, despite mounting evidence that the child was being abused.

In reply to a message from Endicott about Joseph not being well, she wrote: "Just make sure he's OK, and that he doesn't get hurt today. Love you."

Later that day, multiple messages were sent back and forth about how to conceal evidence -- with most of the suggestions coming from Schoolfield.
"She's the one who is taking an active role in obstructing this investigation," Middendorff said.

16 years after she let scum abuse her child -

With all due respect I believe this momster chose a POC boyfriend, over her precious son. The plea bargain that took Murder 1 off the table is a travesty of justice - Joseph deserved better.
