School year begins with still no sign of missing Oregon boy
September 7, 2010 -- Updated 1809 GMT (0209 HKT)

Tuesday was the first day of classes at the Portland, Oregon, school where Kyron Horman allegedly was last seen in early June. The new year at Skyline Elementary also brings additional security measures to protect the children and staff.

In a letter to parents, Principal Ben Keefer said video cameras will be installed this weekend at Skyline. "These cameras will show external views of the building as well as the main hallway," he wrote. Also, security procedures will be reviewed to ensure they are effective, he added.

First Day Of School Begins Without Kyron Horman

UPDATED: 11:14 am PDT September 7, 2010

Despite media coverage of the first day of school, Keefer said teachers were trying to uphold a business-as-usual attitude at the school Tuesday.

"The vibe today at school is very much first day," Keefer said. "There's definitely some melancholy feelings from folks, but on a whole, what you see from our students is that typical first-day butterflies, excitement and smiles on their faces as they go about their business."

Portland Public Schools spokesman Matt Shelby said there have been district-wide security changes in the wake of Kyron's disappearance.

"It was a safe school on June 4 and it's an even safer place now," Keefer said.

Wall of Hope for Kyron Horman relocated next to a fire station near Skyline School

As Skyline School students eased into their first day of the new school year, Kaine Horman this morning joined with volunteers and friends to erect the new Wall of Hope in honor of his missing son, Kyron, just down the hill.

Kaine Horman bought Kyron, who has been missing since June 4, a new Ironman backpack, and had it sitting by his son's bedroom door this morning with his soccer gear.

"The security now is better than it was a year ago," Keefer said.

Despite Kaine preparing for Kyron's return, the missing boy's name will be dropped off the roll call in 10 days, Keefer said.

"I told her (Kyron's teacher) to do what was right for the class, not necessarily what's right for Kyron at this point," Kaine said.

For safety, Portland-area schools get serious about visitor badges, locked doors, phone calls home
Published: Tuesday, September 07, 2010, 3:17 PM
Updated: Tuesday, September 07, 2010, 3:18 PM

Visitors to most Portland-area schools should expect to have to enter through a single main door, sign in and wear a visitor badge whenever they drop in, even if just to deliver their child's forgotten lunch or fill a regularly scheduled volunteer role.

For years, schools have had sign-in sheets and nametags at the front desk. But just as routinely, parents and other visitors blew off the hassle and formality.

But after Kyron Horman's still-unsolved disappearance from Portland's Skyline School in the spring, Portland and suburban schools say they've made signing in a true requirement, not an option.

They've also cracked down on allowing any door except the main entrance to be unlocked or propped open, steering everyone through a single, better-observed entry.

Skyline Elementary Welcomes Students With New Security
September 7, 2010

Skyline is unique because it has new cameras installed. Skyline is also the only school with a missing student that the whole country is aware of.

Skyline principal Ben Keefer says he discussed Kyron’s situation with the boy’s father, Kaine, and assigned the boy to a classroom.

Ben Keefer: “Kyron was on our rolls as of June 4th, and he only missed seven days. So technically, he wasn’t withdrawn. Kaine and I have talked, and Kaine wanted him to be ready for school. He came about school supplies. We have a class assignment ready for him, and hopefully he’ll be able to use it – that’s our hope.”

School district officials say they’ve spoken to police, and are convinced that Skyline was a safe school before Horman’s disappearance, and is even safer, now.

School Saves a Desk for Missing Kyron Horman
Tuesday September 07, 2010 07:00 PM EDT

As students return to school from summer vacation, a desk will be waiting for Kyron, says Matt Shelby, spokesman for the Portland School District.

"He's enrolled as a student. There's a spot there waiting for him," says Shelby, who adds that school policy states that a child is withdrawn from school after missing 10 consecutive days. "The school is ready for Kyron and we all hope he shows up."
