It’s not unusual for Skanda Navaratnam to disappear for a couple days at a time, so two years ago he made a deal with his best friend.

“After three days, if you don’t hear from me, start worrying,” Jean-Guy Cloutier recalled Navaratnam telling him.

It has been nearly three weeks since the 40-year-old man vanished from a downtown bar. His family of friends started worrying a long time ago.

“I’m hoping that he decided to just pick up and go. That would be the best-case scenario, that he just forgot (about our deal) and said, ‘Forget this, I’m going to start a new life somewhere else,’” Cloutier said Thursday amid a week of postering pictures of his friend around downtown Toronto around downtown Toronto.

That scenario is hopeful, but seems unlikely considering the circumstances.

Toronto police link three missing persons’ cases in Gay Village

In what were originally thought unconnected incidents of missing persons, Toronto police have now linked the cases of three men who disappeared over the last three years from the heart of the city’s gay community.

Police haven’t ruled out foul play in the disappearance of three men from the heart of Toronto’s gay community.

And without any answers into what happened, the community is on edge.

In what were originally thought to be three unconnected incidents of missing persons, police have now linked the cases of Skandaraj “Skanda” Navaratnam, 40, Abdulbasir “Basir” Faizi, 44, and 59-year-old Majeed “Hamid” Kayhan.

The men disappeared between mid-2010 and late 2012.

"Seattle fugitive suspected of killing two gay men nabbed in New Jersey
West Orange and Essex County authorities took Ali Muhammed Brown, 29, into custody on Friday afternoon on suspicion of killing two men he met at a Seattle gay club on June 1 through a social networking app such as Jack’d or Grindr
."

" The 29-year-old homeless man is expected to be extradited back to Washington state where he faces two counts of aggravated murder for allegedly shooting Dwone Anderson-Young, 23, and Ahmed Said, 27, execution-style on June 1. Their bodies were found in the street outside the home of one of the victims only minutes after leaving a bar together.

The motive behind their violent death, described by prosecutors as “extremely violent, senseless and seemingly unprovoked,” is not clear, but detectives are looking at the killings as a possible hate crime because Anderson-Young and Said were gay"

In what were originally thought to be three unconnected incidents of missing persons, police have now linked the cases of Skandaraj “Skanda” Navaratnam, 40, Abdulbasir “Basir” Faizi, 44, and 59-year-old Majeed “Hamid” Kayhan.

The men disappeared between mid-2010 and late 2012
.

Navaratnam was last seen in the early hours of Sept. 6, 2010, at Zipperz, a popular gay bar in the Church and Carlton Sts. area. Police said he was seen leaving with an unknown man, whom they are now trying to identify.

In the hours prior to his disappearance, Navaratnam was with a friend at another bar he frequented before going to Zipperz alone. In a 2010 interview with Xtra magazine, a close friend said Navaratnam was a regular at the bar, along with Black Eagle and Pegasus, both located on Church near Wellesley St. E.

Hoping that Skanda will be found along with the other missing men now that an arrest has been made.

TORONTO - A man charged with first-degree murder in the presumed deaths of two men who vanished from Toronto's gay village last year is set to appear in court today.

Bruce McArthur, a 66-year-old Toronto man, was arrested and charged yesterday as part of an investigation into the disappearance of Selim Esen and Andrew Kinsman
.
Police also say they believe McArthur is responsible for the deaths of other men, though they did not say who or what led them to that conclusion.

On McArthur’s list of Facebook “friends,” one of the men who went missing in 2012, Skandaraj “Skanda” Navaratnam, is displayed as one of his connections.

As the investigation continues, police are searching five properties connected to McArthur for more evidence. Four of those properties are located in Toronto, while the other one is in Madoc, Ont. in eastern Ontario.

Toronto Gay Village murders should be police wake-up call, expert says
January 24, 2018

Snipped...
...Project Prism, which was formed Aug. 14, is comprised of an officer from the homicide squad, an officer from the sex crimes unit and six members of 51 Division, three of whom were also members of Project Houston, an 18-month investigation that began in November 2012 focusing on the disappearances of three other men with ties to the Church and Wellesley area: Skandaraj “Skanda” Navaratnam, Abdulbasir “Basir” Faizi, and Majeed “Hamid” Kayhan.

Project Houston failed to determine what happened to the three men.

Speaking in general terms, Lee suggested more should be done to intervene in these kinds of cases.

“People don’t just wake up one day and start killing people. There’s usually a gradual process,” he said. “And serial killers are notoriously good at hiding pieces of themselves and their lives. They have secret lives from people around them.”

Lee noted serial killers also enjoy committing the crimes.

...Meanwhile, CBC News reports that Toronto Police are now confirming the accused killer is not being ruled out in any of the earlier disappearances of gay men in the area.
