Bump.

This one does not smell right to me. She disappears whilst hubby is on a camping trip (but LE have not confirmed he went on the trip) and hubby's grandfather (now deceased) starts spreading a story that she has headed off as she has shown such behaviour in the past. She left money and a property in her name and two children. All of this is at http://tdn.com/rainier-woman-presumed-dead/article_65301018-7c51-5f72-8cb7-2dc57cf4c7a9.html. The wider family had farming and logging interests so would be familiar with remote areas. It sounds, from the comments in the story, as though LE do not believe a word about her going off.

Theresa (or Teresa according to the marriage record on Ancestry) married Richard G Murphy III in King, Washington in 1998. He took legal action to recognise the split in 2002 ( https://www.juralindex.com/civil/ri...details-0d5e450743f34814e19f133b7c88f031.html ) but I have not found a formal divorce. It also seems he may have a slightly complicated personal life (perhaps before the marriage) as there is a record of a further court case in 2001 where the Oregon Department of Human Resources opened a case against him listed as 'domestic relations registration foreign support' (https://www.juralindex.com/civil/or...details-e2f02006cf51e55c537e36e4aa6206e6.html ). This seems usually to mean enforcement of a foreign court order for child support or division of goods in a divorce - but if anyone can shed light it would be interesting.

On October 7, one week after Jessica’s 13th birthday, 35-year-old Terry drove her daughter to a friend’s house for a three-night sleepover. The friend happened to be Richard’s cousin’s daughter; the two girls had a volleyball game together the following day.

“I gave her a hug and kiss and she was gone,” Jessica recalls.

According to a statement by the Oregon State Police, Terry’s husband Richard would later tell the Oregon State Police that he saw Terry when she returned home from dropping Jessica off at the sleepover, but that he had left for a camping trip that night, shortly after Terry returned home.

Dateline was unable to contact Richard Murphy for this report.

The day after her volleyball game, October 9, Jessica called home from her friend’s house to tell her mother about the game.

Details of Disappearance

Theresa resided with her husband, Richard Murphy, and her teenage daughter in Rainier, Oregon in 1999. Both of Theresa's children were from her first marriage; her son lived with his father in Klamath Falls, Oregon, a six-hour drive away. A photo of Richard is posted with this case summary.

The family lived in the 72000 block of Hutchison Road. They relocated from Puyallup, Washington in July 1999 to be closer to Richard's relatives. Theresa reportedly regretted the move, as she missed her old job and her family and friends back in Puyallup.

Theresa dropped her daughter off at a friend's home for a three-day sleepover on October 7, 1999. Later that same day, Richard departed on a camping trip to Browns Creek in the Olympic National Forest in Mason County, Washington.

Theresa's daughter called her on October 9 and spoke to her mother, and later thought her mother "didn't sound like herself." Her mother was supposed to pick her up on October 10, but she never arrived. Her daughter called the house several times, trying to reach her, but no one ever answered, so she stayed with her friend.

Eventually, after a few more days, Richard answered the phone; he had returned home from his camping trip. He told his stepdaughter he had no idea where Theresa was. Richard came and picked up his stepdaughter, took her home. Shortly thereafter, Richard called Theresa's ex-husband and asked him to pick up the girl. She moved in with her father and brother in Oregon.

All of Theresa's personal belongings were inside the house. Her pickup truck was parked near the residence with the keys in the ignition. Theresa has never been heard from again. Her sister-in-law reported her as a missing person on October 23, 16 days after she vanished. The reasons for the delay of the report are unknown.

Richard also reported that the family's 1991 Colt 1911 A-1 .45 caliber semiautomatic handgun with serial number 2757178 was missing from their home after his wife disappeared. The weapon has never been located. In August 2001, nearly two years after her disappearance, authorities announced that they believed Theresa is deceased. Her case remains unsolved.

I have the impression that she committed suicide... I don't think she ran away and left her children... she was a beautiful woman but we don't know what was going through her minds before they disappeared or ran away... although her husband left me. Very suspicious he had time to kill her and cover up his crime...
either way
rest in peace
