Randy Charles Spring was a Veteran

Randy Charles Spring

Randy Charles Spring is a U.S. Army Veteran who worked for the California Department of Forestry at the time of his disappearance and was also a volunteer firefighter with the Bostonia, California Fire Department. On October 10, 1988, Spring asked to be dropped off at the intersection of Whitewater and Interstate 10 in Riverside, California to spend a few days hiking. He planned to tackle the northside of Mount San Jacinto, and said he would hitchike back home or call his family for a ride. Randy was carrying an Army-Green Backpack at the time he disappeared and it contained some food in Tupperware containers. There was a possible sighting of him between noon and 1:00 p.m. the day of his disappearance at the base of the mountains, but he has not been seen since. Randy Charles Spring was 28 years old when he disappeared on October 10, 1988. Randy was 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighed 180 pounds. Randy has blonde hair, green eyes and some acne on his face. He was last seen wearing camouflage pants, a dark blue t-shirt and an Army-Green jacket.

These mountains are in my "backyard". I have not hiked Mount SJ, but I know a lot of people who have. There are multiple ways up the mountain. Hiking it is definitely not for anyone who is out of shape or for someone who isn't familiar with hiking difficult terrain. Pretty much every year there is at least one rescue off of the mountain because someone got lost. A young couple even set a fire a few years back because they were lost. They had come across another missing hiker's items (he was deceased) and used them to help start the fire. People I know who have climbed it say it's easy to lose the trail and get lost if you leave it.
I suspect he either became lost or injured and is still on the mountain, hidden by the dense brush and trees. However, he could have also chosen to leave and perhaps never climbed the mountain. It's curious to me that he wanted to be dropped off where he did. You can get much closer to trail heads, but there might also be a trail head in that area. Whitewater has lots of trails, including the PCT.
