Donna left her mother's Rancho Santa Margarita, California apartment at approximately 5:30 pm on June 23, 2007. She was with John Steven Burgess, aka Sinjin Stevens, whom she met on the internet. That day was the first day they had met in person. They went to a party at his rented home in Los Angeles. While at the party, Donna called a friend and said she had locked herself in the bathroom because Burgess was freaking her out.
On June 24, Donna's mother received two text messages from her phone. The first said "Goodnight Momy. Love you." The second said "battery dead. in san diego and be home later. love you Momy." Donna never made it home and has never been heard from again. Her family does not believe that it was Donna that sent the text messages, as she did not use the term "mommy" and usually wrote "u" for "you". Donna's family reported her missing on June 26 after she failed to show up for work and school.
Burgess is a convicted sex offender. He was not registered at the time Donna disappeared. He has refused to cooperate with authorities in Donna's case. In March 2009, he was charged with involuntary manslaughter in her case. She may have died of an accidental drug overdose at the party. Burgess later confessed and said he dumped her body far off the California shore. Her body has never been found.
