Erica Jayne Franolich's relationship with her husband was on the rocks when she traveled to Schenectady County during the summer of 1986. They had had a rough-and-tumble relationship prior to that, involving drugs and constant traveling with a cable installation company.

Tensions came to a head when Richard Franolich left his wife with her family in Michigan and stole away with their infant son to the Duanesburg area. She followed him in the hopes of retrieving the boy.

Erica Jayne Franolich wore a baggy shirt and blue denim overalls when she vanished from the quiet streets of Middleburgh.

It was just before Halloween in 1986, when the troubled 26-year-old mother from Michigan was last seen in Schoharie County. She was last known to be living with her husband, Richard Franolich, after moving to the area during the summer.
Now State Police investigators are looking for new leads in Franolich's disappearance. Authorities are unsure of what happened...

Snip from JMason's article preview:

"Down in the Middleburgh area...she called her brother in michigan...that she was in fear of her life...she was supposed to recontact him the next day to get out of there but she never did."

A UID of interest... MI MI - Detroit, WhtFem UP8272, 16-25, Had Recently Given Birth, Feb'87 - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

Edited to add: Have sent an email to Justin Mason the reporter at The Daily Gazette who wrote the articles on Erica Franolich asking him to take a look at this UID. Is hard to shake the death of this UID in Feb 1987....and the words he wrote in his preview re Erica's family got frantic in Feb 1987 so initiated a missing persons report. Premonition of loved ones? Hardly scientific...but hardly ignore-able. (posted to UID thread also)

Here's a snippet of the 1986 article in the Gazette on the website below.

Erica Jayne Franolich wore a baggy shirt and blue denim overalls when she vanished from the quiet streets of Middleburgh. It was just before Halloween in 1986, when the troubled 26-yearold mother from Michigan was last seen in Schoharie County. She was last known to be living with her husband, Richard Franolich, after moving to the area during the summer.

Now State Police investigators are looking for new leads in Franolich’s disappearance. Authorities are unsure of what happened to the petit, brown-haired, browneyed woman, who left behind two infant sons.

“We’ve ruled out that she left on her own,” said state police Investigator William John.

John said residents at the time knew the couple and saw them together in the months leading up to Franolich’s disappearance. They spent most of the summer with the husband’s brother, Joe Franolich, in Schenectady County and the fall in Schoharie County, where many residents reported seeing the couple together. “All of a sudden, she wasn’t around anymore,” he said.

Hmmm I understand that this UID was eliminated on dental records also but they should never rule out a missing person against an UID because of pregnancy or the lack thereof. It is always possible that a missing female is unknowingly pregnant or even that one can claim to have been pregnant but be lying!

Good point!

On another note, I was looking at some of the older articles on Erica, and I think that if she's a UID, she could be in NY, Vermont, or even New Jersey. Doesn't narrow it down much, but I think I'm going to start taking a look at UID's in those areas.

An interesting article from 2010 where LE specifically name Richard Franolich as the 'prime person of interest'. Whilst this may be obvious it is one thing to speculate and another for LE to say so.

Thanks so much for posting that alb1on! Most of the articles that I found when looking at this were behind paywalls, so I couldn't post much from them.

From the article...

Tensions came to a head when Richard Franolich left his wife with her family in Michigan and stole away with their infant son to the Duanesburg area. She followed him in the hopes of retrieving the boy.

The 26-year-old mother planned to go to Duanesburg, take the boy and head back to Michigan. But they reconciled. However, within months of her arrival in New York she had another falling-out with her husband and later called her brother in Michigan to tell him she feared for her life, authorities said.

“She was supposed to contact [her brother] again the next day to get out of there, but she never did,” said William John, an investigator with the New York State Police.

Instead, she vanished without a trace. Shortly after her disappearance, her husband took their son and went to Vermont, where he remains.

It was Erica's sister (not her husband) who reported her missing in February 1987 almost 4 months after she was last seen.

Nada Thompson, the woman’s older sister, first reported the disappearance in February 1987. She is hoping someone will step forward with new leads so that her sister’s disappearance will finally reach a resolution.

http://rotterdamny.info/m-1209817090/

From the same link, Erica and her husband apparently spent quite a bit of time with Richard's brother, Joe, while they lived in New York. Just another fact to throw in.

John said residents at the time knew the couple and saw them together in the months leading up to Franolich’s disappearance. They spent most of the summer with the husband’s brother, Joe Franolich, in Schenectady County and the fall in Schoharie County, where many residents reported seeing the couple together.

Bump up for Erica. Coming up on 29 years missing.

I hope you are found soon Erica.

What do y'all think about this possible match? Age and height are slightly off, but not off enough to make me think it couldn't be her. I think the sketch favors her a lot.

Really wish we knew if she had any dental work done...

I agree with you about the sketch, but the postmortem interval on the UID is 15 years (approx. date of death about 1983). I guess the estimate could be off a few years. Anything is possible.
