Catherine Sybil Worsky

Endangered Missing from Charlottesville, Virginia since July 12, 1982

Age: 12 -- Hair Color: Blonde

Catherine's name may be spelled Katherine. Her nickname is Katie.

Catherine was last seen at the home of a friend, Tammy Gates, in Charlottesville, Virginia on July 12, 1982. She was spending the night with Tammy. Tammy's mother, Carrie Gates, called Catherine's parents early that morning, thinking the girl had returned to her own apartment. She had not, and her parents notified police.

Glenn Haslam Barker was immediately a suspect. He stated that he had come to the Gates home and given the girls one can of beer each. Tammy said she and Catherine had actually had more alcohol than that, and got sick. Barker said he left after the girls went to bed about 12:30 am. Tammy woke up at 5:30 am and realized Catherine was gone.

In a search of Barker's apartment, they found wet, bloodstained men's clothing and towels wedged between his mattress and box-spring. Some was Type A, Barker's type, and some was Type B, Catherine's type. Barker said he didn't know how the clothes and towels got there. During a second search, authorities found a pair of girls' panties hidden in a rolled up ball of socks in Barker's dresser.

In January 1983, Barker was arrested and charged with Catherine's murder. He was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to prison. He was released in 1992. Catherine has never been located, and foul play is suspected.
