2 workers killed in Tenn. post office shooting

HENNING, Tenn.~Two women working at a rural West Tennessee post office were shot and killed Monday during a possible robbery attempt, authorities said.

The shooting happened Monday morning at the post office in Henning, the hometown of "Roots" author Alex Haley, the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department told The Associated Press.

Officers were searching for a maroon Chevrolet Malibu with two men inside, and no arrests have been made...."

Post Office Murders: Customers near shooting speak out
HENNING, TN (WMC-TV) - A Mid-South manhunt continued Monday evening as authorities searched for the suspects who murdered two women at a West Tennessee post office.

The brutal attack happened Monday morning inside a post office in Henning, located an hour north of Memphis in Lauderdale County.

Two customers, who spoke to Action News 5, came close to being caught in the post office shootout themselves.

Mary Hammock may have been the last customer to set foot into the Henning Post Office before the shooting.

I work approximately five miles from the Henning, TN Post Office and one of the victims is my neighbor. This community is devastated by this tragedy and we're praying whoever did this is caught soon.

Police are still hunting for the killers but are hopeful of an arrest....

Thursday, investigators were looking into the possibility that a gun used by an 18-year-old carjacking suspect, Chastain Montgomery, was also used in the post office murders.

Montgomery was fatally shot after a police chase through two counties. According to the Tipton County Sherrif's Office, Montgomery was killed after he got out of a stolen pickup armed with two handguns...

The teenager's father, also named Chastain Montgomery, is being held on charges related to the Monday shootout... While in custody, sources say, the elder Montgomery confessed to the October post office murders.

Chastain Montgomery, Sr., 50, of Lavergne, TN, was sentenced to consecutive life sentences in federal prison for the murders of United States Postal Service employees Paula Robinson and Judy Spray...

On May 22, 2014, Montgomery pled guilty to the seven count superseding indictment and avoided facing the death penalty for his crimes.
