A jury found a Lakeland man guilty Wednesday of fatally stabbing his girlfriend and trying to hide her body.

Circuit Judge Donald Jacobsen sentenced Monday Demarsh, 38, to life in prison for the killing of Virginia Varnum...

The 44-year-old woman's slaying has been a controversial subject for the Lakeland Police Department. During closing arguments, prosecutors acknowledged officers mishandled events surrounding Varnum's disappearance... Nortje told jurors that officers who responded were on the end of their night shift, and the threat wasn't taken seriously.
