Hi all,

As we have been following little Zahra Baker's story, we have repeatedly come across inaccurate information, particularly from MSM. These mistakes likely happen because media is rushing to get us the latest news as fast as possible, and are playing "telephone" with one another so that information gets distorted. However well-intentioned the mistakes are, they cause great frustration and confusion when we should be focusing all our energies on factual evidence to bring Zahra the justice she so much deserves.

Let's use this thread to list myths & misinformation about this case, and post the correct information. PLEASE SUPPORT YOUR POSTS WITH LINKS.

Thank you so very much!

MYTH OR FACT?

MONTE CARLO

What's the story with the 70s Monte Carlo that Elisa was driving up to the time Zahra disappeared? Can't believe police have not found that yet.

We are unaware of a 1970's Monte Carlo being part of this investigation. Though Hickory Police are releasing few details since last Tuesday when this became a homicide investigation. Hickory Police do still ask anyone from the public with information about this family to come forward. They specifically want to talk to people who have seen Zahra Baker since September 25th or people who have insight to the little girl's home life. Hickory Police Department 828-261-2600.

Another tip came from a family friend, who claims Elisa Baker drove a 1970s model Monte Carlo. That friend says the car seemed to disappear the same time Zahra did.

We don't know if the leads are legitimate or not. Police aren't talking about them, only saying they're following up on everything.

I am going to have to go with myth til I have something other than unnamed family friend.

The head in the hole for me, at this point in time, is a myth although it has been stated several times on NG. I personally don't VIEW NG as MSM but many do.

Who knows, as sick as this case has turned out to be thus far maybe there was a head in the smaller hole within the hole at Dudley Shoals. But I think it is a leap for NG to be bandying that one about.

Myth: Bone fragment. This has been reported on NG (CNN) ABS news, etc.

FACT: The bone fouund at Christy Road search has now been confimred as human and as a match to Zahra, but as late as 11-11-10 it was STILL being described by some as a "bone Fragment"

Investigators say that the bone is not a small piece and is not a chip of a bone, but seems to be a complete bone.

As of 12/01/10, it is NOT an established fact that Zahra was raped by two men at a home in Burke County. What has been reported, with the release of the search warrants, is that LE followed up on a tip that Zahra MAY have been raped by two men. All we know,at this juncture, is that LE has investigated the reported incident.

Being arrested overseas

If you are arrested overseas you have the right to contact the Australian Government, but consular assistance cannot override local law, even when local laws may appear harsh by Australian standards. The Australian Government cannot get you out of jail.

What we can do to assist

We will do everything in our power to assist Australians who are arrested or in prison overseas, but we must also work within the legal and administrative processes that apply in the country.

We can:

  • visit you while you are detained
  • assist you in getting information about visitor procedures or accessing money or telephones
  • provide you with a list of local English-speaking lawyers
  • if authorised, arrange for your next-of-kin to be contacted and informed of your welfare
  • assist you to organise your family and friends to send you money
  • assist you to maintain contact with your family
  • discuss justified and serious complaints about ill-treatment or discrimination with the local authorities
  • raise medical or dental issues with local authorities, should you fail in your attempts to have these issues addressed
  • arrange a small loan from the Australian Government under the Prisoner Loan Scheme (subject to your location and strict eligibility criteria)
  • monitor your court trials and, in some circumstances, attend as an observer
  • where applicable, provide you with information on the International Transfer of Prisoners Scheme
  • support an application for a pardon, if local law and practice allow.
What we cannot do

We cannot:

  • get you out of jail, or give Local Authorities written guarantees to secure your release
  • determine your innocence or otherwise
  • conduct investigations relating to any alleged offence
  • provide you or your family with legal advice
  • make recommendations as to which lawyer you should choose
  • pay your lawyer’s fees, instigate court procedures or interfere in local judicial processes
  • seek better treatment for you than that provided to the host country’s own citizens or other nationals
  • arrange your bail or pay your fines
  • support you financially in prison, except in some circumstances where the country and your circumstances qualify you for the Prisoner Loan Scheme.
