Prince Albert police dig for evidence in historic cold case

BY JOANA DRAGHICI, PRINCE ALBERT HERALD NOVEMBER 5, 2010

PRINCE ALBERT— City police began excavating a patch of land just north of Prince Albert on Thursday. They were looking for evidence at Little Red River Park that might lead to answers in the disappearance of a Prince Albert woman more than 31 years ago.

"We're acting on some information in regards to a historic case involving a missing woman — with today's technology, there are new avenues (that) allow us to investigate further," Staff Sgt. Tim Settee said a few steps from the yellow police tape sectioning off the digging site.

June Ann Johnson was 34 years old when she was last seen Aug. 3, 1979, when her daughter dropped her off at what used to be the Marlboro Hotel.

She was a nurse, this is her missing person picture. There isn't much on her.

''Sgt. Kathy Edwardsen's investigations begin when another ends. As a cold case investigator at the Prince Albert Police Service, files don't land on her desk until all angles of the initial investigation have been exhausted.

"At the onset it's just one big puzzle … many of the pieces have been filled in and now I'm looking at here, here and here, a few puzzle pieces of that puzzle just haven't been filled yet."

Sgt. Edwardsen started working exclusively on cold cases in January 2019. Her first priority was to review all of the cases and identify which threads to follow first.

She is currently tasked with investigating eight missing persons case files and one unsolved homicide.

The earliest case, which dates back to 1979, is the disappearance of 34-year-old June Johnson, a nurse who hasn't been seen since being driven to the Marlboro Hotel in Prince Albert.''

''The National Centre of Missing Persons and Unidentified Remains now has a database of the DNA profiles of unidentified human remains.

Sgt. Edwardsen has been encouraging family members of missing people to submit their DNA to the database.''

The Leader-Post, 22 Dec 2010, pg 4. According to this article, she was dropped off at the hotel by her 14 y/o daughter & her boyfriend telling them she was going fishing for the weekend. The article also states she had quit her job and was planning a move to Winnipeg. A person of interest, later identified as a dangerous offender, walked away in 2008 and as of this article date had not yet been found.

Thanks for that information... Is it certain that it was left at the hotel? And that she didn't go off with someone or maybe do something crazy? I have the impression that she had depression on the outside, it is not noticeable, but inside they are very bad... I hope it is not the case, a young woman is always sad when they leave so young, whatever
rest in peace
