DES MOINES, Iowa — Authorities on Tuesday charged a Minnesota teenager with murdering two convenience store clerks at separate stores in northern Iowa.

Michael Richard Swanson, a 17-year-old from St. Louis Park, Minn., was charged as an adult with two counts each of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery in slayings in Kossuth and Humboldt counties.

The teen said he shot both clerks intentionally so that they would not call authorities or identify him, the Des Moines Register reported, citing an affidavit filed in Kossuth and Humboldt counties.

This kid has some serious issues- when they were taking him into court, he was smiling and laughing- good lord.

Here's some video of the young sociopath. :furious:

Sending prayers to the families and friends of the two innocent victims.

Some of these teenagers are so frightening.

What happened to their conscience or valuing human life?

These two women complied to his demands yet he callously murdered them and then is able to laugh. (shudder)

IMO

I would agree. Swanson is a classic sociopath. However, he's actually too young to be labeled with that disorder. It would be interesting to know whether the behaviors preceded the use of drugs or followed it. Mushrooms can be devastatingly dangerous for those with any form of psychosis. I've often wondered why psychotic people seem to be drawn to them. Also, the use of high THC (medical grade) pot has also been shown to exacerbate psychosis and erratic behavior. Once again, they seem to seek it out. I hate to be a voyeur but I'd really like to read this boy's psych eval.

My heart breaks for the families of the victims but I see Swanson's family and friends as victims too. It sounds as if everyone did all they could. His parents much be reeling. The incident with the squirrel is the deal-breaker. By that time, his future was clinched. I wonder if he has other victims who have yet to come forward, out of fear. This is the type of child who would prey on any vulnerable person--a young child, an elder, the disabled. No telling how many animals he has tortured.

The boy did not ask to be this way. That's the tragedy. I don't believe that he had much say in the matter.

The comments at the link below are interesting and disturbing. It's absolutely amazing to me how many people blame the parents and the school. I guess many in the general public truly do not have experience with severe mental illness.

After reading the VERY disturbing background on this individual, and seeing his maniacal laughter after slaughtering two innocent women, it is clear that he should never see the light of day again. There is no way society should permit this "person" to walk the streets again. He would kill in an instant if given the chance, imo. This is not someone that a course of "therapy" or medication could cure or render safe.
Sometimes there's no earthly explanation for this kind of evil.

JMO.

Omg! How horrible, it seemed the help he recieved did him no good. I feel for his family, and for the families of the 2 women that were murdered. Teenagers nowadays scare me so much.

I feel for all the families destroyed by this young man, including his own. I cannot imagine the pain being experienced by any of these victims. All those children left without a mom. His own parents, struggling to figure out the why of it all, asking themselves in the dark wee hours of sleepless nights, what else could we have done?

Tragic, and meanwhile, a killer laughs and apes for the cameras.

Praise God----I will never forget the smirk on this perps face when he made his first court appearance!!! Absolutely no remorse or any concept that he had done anything wrong. I wanted to slap him!!!!! And, both the clerks had given him what liile money they had. He shot them anyway!!!!!!!

Wonder if he'll be laughing after spending a few weeks in the big house. Let him laugh at at a few prisoners and we'll see what happens.

This monster was convicted of 1 count of 1st degree murder and 1 count of 1st degree robbery today. He still needs to be tried for the other murder, but with these first two charges he will receive a sentence of Life in Prison. Here's hoping the second murder trail will push it up too a sentence "without possibility of parole."

He has also pled guilty in the murder of Vicki Bowman-Hall.

ALGONA, Iowa -- A Minnesota teen convicted of killing an Iowa gas station clerk admitted to the killing Thursday during a plea hearing.

Michael Swanson, 18, read a statement in court admitting he walked into the Crossroads Convenience Store on Nov. 15, 2010, and shot Vicky Bowman-Hall.

KCCI reporter Angie Hunt said Swanson showed no emotion while reading the statement and then answered a lot of yes and no questions from the judge.
