LAKE PLACID, NY -- New York authorities are still searching for a Saranac Lake man last seen Saturday at a popular hiking trail.

Wesley A. Wamsganz, 22, was reported missing to the Saranac Lake Police Department on Sunday by his family.

Wamsganz was last seen at Saturday at 2 p.m. leaving The Downtown Diner in Lake Placid where he works. Police said initial information indicated he was heading to Northville Lake Placid Trail or the Adirondack Loj area.

Police said witnesses may have seen him Saturday at the Adirondack Loj parking lot.

On Monday DEC Forest Rangers conducted a search of parking areas, trailheads and roadways.

This morning, DEC Forest Rangers, State Troopers and State Police Special Operations Team are conducting a ground search south of the Adirondack Loj area.

Police describe Wamsganz as a 6-foot, 2-inch white male with blond hair and blue eyes weighing approximately 175 pounds. He was last seen wearing a green Carhatt jacket over a black hooded Bob Marley sweatshirt, jeans, a yellow, red and green striped brimmed beanie and hiking boots.

Anyone with any information regarding his possible whereabouts are asked to contact the Lake Placid Police Department at 518-523-3306.

LAKE PLACID - Forest rangers and police are searching the High Peaks Wilderness south of the Adirondak Loj for a Saranac Lake man who went missing over the weekend.

Wesley A. Wamsganz, 22, was last seen early Saturday afternoon in the village of Lake Placid, after leaving the Downtown Diner, where he works. He was walking on Sentinel Road toward the Adirondak Loj area, according to village police Sgt. Chuck Dobson and Department of Environmental Conservation spokesman David Winchell. It isn't known why he was headed there, according to Dobson, but he told the last person he spoke to that was where he was going.

Beginning today, DEC will send additional forest rangers to assist in the search along with more than two dozen volunteers from the New York State Search and Rescue Foundation. State Police in Ray Brook will send two more K-9 units, and personnel will use what Winchell described as a type-III grid search starting at the location of the young man’s jacket.

State Police Special Operations and canine units tracked and searched for traces of the young man. They found only his green Carhartt jacket, where he apparently left it on the trail.

"Searchers tried to use a helicopter today but had to abandon that effort due to high winds; they will look for openings Thursday to use it, DEC spokesman Dave Winchell said.

Searchers are using dogs, Friedrich said, but their usefulness is limited since nobody has seen Wamsganz for several days. The dogs are being brought to areas where they don't think people have been, to see if they detect any human scent."

It has been down to 30 and below here. Best case scenario is he found a seasonal cabin with heat and canned goods. Most seasonal places here have been winterized and closed up until spring.

Lake Placid, New York - November 26, 2010

The search continues for a missing man in the Adirondacks.

Wesley Wamsganz, 22 of Saranac Lake, was last seen Saturday along a trail near Marcy Dam. Crews found his jacket, meaning he is only wearing a hooded sweatshirt, pant and shoes.

Authorities spent Thanksgiving looking for Wamsganz. Weather conditions finally permitted a helicopter to be used.

Anyone who plans to volunteer in the search efforts Friday should first call the state Department of Environmental Conservation who is leading the search efforts.

Father keeps hope alive

November 30, 2010 - By PETER CROWLEY, Enterprise Managing Editor

SARANAC LAKE - Alan Wamsganz is hopeful that his son Wesley is alive, that the 22-year-old turned around and left the High Peaks Wilderness after going in 10 days ago.

"Even though all the signs point to Wesley being up there in that area, there is a chance that he could have come out of there without being seen," Alan told the Enterprise Monday in a phone interview.
