Juane Johnson has been missing from her home at the Royal Gardens apartment complex since February 18, 1998, when she failed to report to her job in Somerville. On the morning of February 18, 1998, Juane Johnson took food to her daughter at the baby sitter's house. Johnson left for the bus stop, at the corner of Washington and Vail streets in Piscataway, on her way to work at a Somerville book distributor, but she never made it.

Her parents reported their daughter missing in the early morning hours of February 19 after realizing she had not returned home.

Juane Johnson had been out of work due to illness and was afraid of losing her job. Her relationship with a Plainfield man was very troubled. She was also struggling to save enough money to buy a car and provide for her daughter.

When Juane Johnson disappeared, police searched western Middlesex and eastern Somerset counties daily for more than a month by air and on the ground and questioned all of Johnson's friends, co- workers and relatives, but without success.

Piscataway family still searching for answers in 1998 missing person case

Breionte Johnson does not wait for mommy anymore.

She no longer pens the plaintive letters she wrote as a wide-eyed 5-year-old, pleading for answers.

"Just call me and tell me you’re up there," one said.

Those childhood hopes were dashed long ago.

Now 18, Breionte Johnson says she does not even remember her mother, Juane Johnson, who disappeared inexplicably on Feb. 18, 1998.

Authorities believe she never made it onto the bus, but was abducted at the bus stop and killed. She was dumped, naked, in a field behind St. John Union Cemetery in Williams Township, Pa., located off the first exit along Route 78 after leaving New Jersey.

In 2001, a hunter found her remains and called police. The bones were turned over to the Northampton County coroner, who tried to make an identification. He was unable to put a name to the skeleton.

It would take another decade before advances in DNA analysis and forensic science were used to identify the bones as those of McAuley-Johnson.
