The search for a missing woman has uncovered four bodies, hidden on a remote Long Island beach.

And investigators fear this may just be the beginning.

I saw this report tonight on our local 11pm news...I hope I posted this correctly and in the right area as this is the first thread I started!

Ruthi - I am stepping all over your first post here so that we can put the young ladies up front in this thread. Salem

Just another article I found...apparently these remains were found while searching for a woman named Shonnan Gilbert. She is from Jersey City, NJ and has been missing since May.

I know on the news show tonight it said at least one of the bodies was a female. 3 of the bodies are badly decomposed (they were found Monday) while the 4th is skeletonized remains that was found on Saturday by a police canine unit.

I wonder what led LE to that area to search for Gilbert. I also wonder if they were all prostitutes who answered Craig's List ads. Gruesome story.

This is starting to sound like the work of a serial killer - especially if LE is thinking there's more bodies.

I hope they can all be ID'd & that there's someone to care about their remains.

Police discovered the decomposed bodies of three people on an isolated strip of Oak Beach in thick underbrush Monday, two days after finding skeletal remains of a fourth nearby.

Det. Lt. Gerard Pelkofsky of Suffolk's Homicide Squad acknowledged last night the strong possibility that the four people - found near Ocean Parkway - are homicide victims dumped there by the same person or persons.

"Common sense tells us it's not a coincidence," he said.

Boy this is real scary. My coworkers and myself use this parkway to go to work. There are several people missing on LI.

There are several missing persons on Long Island. One that comes to mind
is Megan Waterman. Police believe Waterman worked as an escort and that she may have been in Long Island for that reason. She has not been in touch with friends or family since the weekend of June 5, when she was staying at the Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge, N.Y.

Michael Taus family is looking for help to find their missing son, who left for a blind date with a woman he met on a social dating website. Michael Taus, 24, of West Islip and his dog Romeo went missing June 18 and his parents are heartbroken and frantically seeking their son.

"... some of the bodies were wrapped in burlap."

so this might be a clue - only b/c burlap doesn't seem like a common household item sold everywhere - mostly used in agriculture I think?

or was it discarded in that area & the perp just used what was available?

this is so creepy ...

It is creeeeepy....sounds like they were all dumped recently - and just a few feet off the road.

I hope they find this monster quick.

In one of the articles I read it said that Gilbert had a 'date' set up on Fire Island which is not far from where the bodies were found. I'll see if I can find the link. Not only were they searching for Gilbert but LE was using this as a training exercise for the canine unit that found the skeletonized remains.

This isn't the original article I read but it does reference Gilbert going to Fire Island.

Last night I tried to search for missing information on Gilbert but couldn't find her on any of the MP sites I looked at. The only thing I could find was a small 2009 article of someone with the name of Shannon Gilbert (a misprint?) who was picked up for prostitution in Hoboken, NJ which is right next to Jersey City where it is stated she is from.

"We're looking at that - that we could have a serial killer," Dormer said in response to a reporter's question.
....................
The remains were badly decomposed, but appeared to have been dumped over an 18-month period, Dormer said.
...................
Dormer said there was no indication that Gilbert was among the four bodies.

Burlap is also used in landscaping and road/highway construction.

Last nite I read an article that was related to this case that named a 'Shannon' not 'Shonnan' & mentioned the prostitution charge in NJ.

I'll see if I can find it again...I was also wondering if initial reports had misspelled the missing woman's name.

ETA:

I can find 2 articles I read early this a.m. - both with 'Shannon', but they don't mention the prostitution charge in NJ....maybe I'm just getting mixed up (or haven't found the other article yet).

Crime scene investigators resumed the search at dawn, mobilizing a command post along scenic Ocean Parkway just yards from where families spend time at the beautiful beaches.

Suffolk Homicide called in the FBI. They worked late into the night in the foul weather, digging into what emerged as a sandy graveyard. Body parts were found and a yellow marker was placed on each grisly find.

This is very creepy. And so close to the public beaches! My family and I were at beaches very close by this summer. I've seen/heard some conflicting reports as to whether the bodies were buried or just thrown into the brush. One of the recent articles posted said it looked like they were thrown from a car into the brush, but they've also been talking about digging them up. Maybe there is drifting sand that has covered them?

I'm very curious to hear a list of missing people in the area, and am concerned that this could be the work of someone targeting prostitutes or others that may be more vulnerable, or not looked for as quickly. Although it is very interested that the police were doing a training mission looking for Gilbert when they found the first body. I wonder if there is any other reason (beyond her last known location near Fire Island) that they were looking in that vicinity (ie. a tip, a report of a stopped vehicle nearby, etc.)?

Police will be interviewing Gilbert's alleged pimp and client from that day, Dormer said. He would not identify them or give other details.
Dormer said police have no suspects in the case.

Also, a Maine detective said Tuesday he is waiting to hear from Suffolk authorities on whether one of the bodies is related to his missing persons case.

Det. Donald Blatchford of the Scarborough, Maine, police said he had talked with Suffolk police Monday and was expecting to hear if one of the bodies was that of Scarborough resident Megan Waterman, 22, who was last seen at a Holiday Inn Express in Hauppauge on June 6.
.......................
Blatchford said he has been in regular contact with Suffolk authorities since Waterman disappeared. She and her boyfriend had traveled from Scarborough to Long Island after placing an ad for an escort on Craigslist.

Blatchford said Suffolk police already have DNA evidence in the Waterman case from belongings left behind in the Hauppauge hotel.

This area is accessible from so many directions it would be beneficial to look at missing person reports from New Jersey and Connecticut as well as NY.

This is very creepy indeed. If more than one of the bodies was wrapped in burlap that suggests they were dumped by the same person.

Also, if these women turn out to all be prostitutes or escorts it is less likely they were reported missing.

I am looking through NJ missing women right now.
