A Romanian priest who witnessed a mugging followed and caught the three-man gang responsible.

The priest was walking home in Bacau when he saw the men snatching a gold chain from around a woman's neck.

He decided to intervene and followed the robbers until they entered a pawn shop to change the chain for money.

Priest Iulian Ichim told Jurnalul newspaper: "I walked behind but without letting them know I was following them.

"When they got to the pawn shop one of them stayed out to check the area. That was the first to be immobilised and I brought him inside the shop.

"I didn't know if they were armed so I told them I was a policeman and had a gun which I intended to use if they gave me problems."
