Bath salts. Yes. Who knew that teens and young adults were misusing them to get high and to get violent? And sadly, to commit suicide.....

Officials: 'Bath salts' are growing drug problem

".....Increasingly, law enforcement agents and poison control centers say the advertised bath salts with complex chemical names are an emerging menace in several U.S. states where authorities talk of banning their sale. From the Deep South to California, emergency calls are being reported over-exposure to the stimulants the powders often contain: mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone, also known as MDPV...."

and

"....Dr. Rick Gellar, medical director for the California Poison Control System, said the first call about the substances came in Oct. 5, and a handful of calls have followed since. But he warned: "The only way this won't become a problem in California is if federal regulatory agencies get ahead of the curve. This is a brand new thing." In the Midwest, the Missouri Poison Center at Cardinal Glennon Children's Medical Center received at least 12 calls in the first two weeks of January about teenagers and young adults abusing such chemicals, said Julie Weber, the center's director. The center received eight calls about the powders all of last year...."

and

".....Sold under such names as Ivory Wave, Bliss, White Lightning and Hurricane Charlie, the chemicals can cause hallucinations, paranoia, rapid heart rates and suicidal thoughts, authorities say. The chemicals are in products sold legally at convenience stores and on the Internet as bath salts and even plant foods. However, they aren't necessarily being used for the purposes on the label...."

Jindal bans ingredients in fake bath salts

Sold openly, snorted or injected, they often send users to ERs
Friday, January 07, 2011 By Bob Warren
St. Tammany bureau

Flanked by a cadre of law enforcement might, Gov. Bobby Jindal announced Thursday that the state has issued an emergency rule making it illegal to sell, use, buy or manufacture the chemicals used in fake bath salts.

Jindal called use of the product, bearing names such as "Cloud Nine,'' "White Dove'' and "Hurricane Charlie'' an "epidemic.''

"These drugs have crept into our communities and they are hurting our kids,'' Jindal said in a morning news conference at a St. Tammany Parish courthouse in Covington packed with government and law enforcement officials from St. Tammany, Jefferson, Tangipahoa, Washington and Livingston parishes.

Slidell police make first bath salts bust

Published: Wednesday, January 12, 2011, 8:35 PM Updated: Friday, January 14, 2011, 2:38 PM

A pair of Slidell men are apparently the first two people in the state to be arrested under new regulations prohibiting the sale or possession of bath salts that have hallucinogenic properties, Slidell police said Wednesday.

A convenience store clerk was still selling "White Dove" the day after Jindal signed the law. He and a customer who purchased it were both busted.

Snorting bath salts pushed St. Tammany man to suicide

Dickie Sanders snorted a packet of Cloud 9 bath salts expecting a euphoric high. Instead, his final days were filled with a terror that will forever haunt his family.

Rocked by waves of paranoia and imagining that the police were closing in on him, the 21-year-old grabbed a knife and, in front of his horrified father and sister, swept the blade across his throat.

This heart wrenching story brought me to tears last Sunday morning.

I find this information disturbing. I think a thread in the "Tots to Teens" would be a great place for this information to go. I have never heard of this stuff before now.

What on earth? Who the heck had the initial idea to snort bath salts to pursue a high??? Ugghh, I feel like I want to vomit just imagining the taste that would come of doing that.

Synthetic substance abuse (i.e., bath salts) is increasing across the nation as hospitals see a rise in the number of related emergencies.

Synthetic drugs send thousands to hospitals with seizures, hallucinations

The products are often packaged as incense or bath salts and can be obtained for as little as $10 at many head shops. As more people experiment with them, the results are becoming evident at hospitals: a sharp spike in the number of users who show up with problems ranging from labored breathing and rapid heartbeats to extreme paranoia and delusions. The symptoms can persist for days...

At least 2,700 people have fallen ill since January, compared with fewer than 3,200 cases in all of 2010. At that pace, medical emergencies related to synthetic drugs could go up nearly fivefold by the end of the year.
"Many of the users describe extreme paranoia," said Dr. Mark Ryan, director of the Louisiana Poison Center. "The recurring theme is monsters, demons and aliens. A lot of them had suicidal thoughts."
This comment is from an Iowa shop owner:

Contrary to DEA claims that the product is most popular among teens and college-age customers, co-owner Kathy Fiedler said two-thirds of her buyers are middle-aged.
"I even have grandmothers coming in," said Fiedler, 56.

If Granny's doing this nasty stuff, how can we expect better of the kids?

   I was thinking the same thing. WOW! What is going on? cant the kids find something constructive to do?
this is not just a sign of a Drug Problem, I think it is a sign of troubled youth.
it is a problem of what the kids today are proactive with :( does not seem to be anything positive.
Boredom is often a result of a mind being waisted. :( Their music is angry, and now it is becoming music about ME, Me, Me.
A very far stretch from the music we used to hear and write about change, love, perceptions, etc.....

I love bath salts especially when I am overtired they really help a lot. Best thing for soar muscles, and exhaustion.
I hope I will not have to get a prescription to get my Dead Sea Salts :twocents:

these are not real bath salts... these are drugs marketed as bath salts so they can be sold at gas stations and places like that.
These can be easy to OD on, they can take a bit to start working so the user does a little more and little more and wham.. you've done too much.
This is from all my reading as Iowa is attempting to outlaw it.

''Bath salts'' is just what they call the drug 'mephedrone'. It is illegal to sell for human consumption, so it is sold as ''bath salts'' or ''plant food''. I was just going to make a thread about this.

Village Voice blog looks at bath salts myths:

6. Bath Salts Are Cooked Up in Labs, Like Meth!
5. Bath Salts Are New
4. Bath Salts Are The Things You Put in a Bath
3. Bath Salts Were Never Used Medicinally
2. Bath Salts Are Easy To Get

"Bath salts" are somethimes sold as "plant food", something else to watch out for if you have kids.

It's a crystalline white powder, made up of flakes rather than granules like sugar. It's texture is more liking icing or confectionary sugar than caster sugar or salt. It usually comes in a resealable plastic bag, possibly with the name 4-methylmethcathinone.

Another Drugged Out Florida Man Gets Naked and Bites Off a Chunk of Human Flesh (Miami NewTimes blog)
---
Police in Palmetto, Florida had to Taser 26-year-old Charles Baker after he stormed into his girlfriend's home and bit a chunk out of the bicep of a man who tried to subdue him.

Last night at about 10 p.m., Baker stormed into the home where his girlfriend and children live. He was high on "an unknown substance," and barged into the home and proceeded to strip his clothes off.

Jeffrey Blake, 48, another resident of the home, tried to restrain Baker. Baker struggled and then bit Blake, "taking a chunk of meat out of his left bicep," according to the arrest report.

Despite the biting, Blake managed to restrain Baker until police arrived -- but even the cops weren't able to immediately calm him down.

One of the responding officers zapped Baker with his Taser, which did a whole lot of nothing -- Baker continued to go crazy. It wasn't until he was electrocuted three times -- and other officers arrived -- that police were able to detain him.

Omg....why would anyone take those things after seeing what they can make you do. Crazy.

This is from all my reading as Iowa is attempting to outlaw it.

Actually the drug MAKES the user crave more and more. It can also make the user want to cut or otherwise injure themselves.

I don't see the appeal of this drug-sounds like a very unpleasant high.

A paramedic friend tells me she's been getting calls for kids snorting real bath salts-not the drug here-they bought from 'Linens and Things' ...

Adding to the list what is not bath salts, but synthetic weed seems to be a huge problem.

K2 or Spice. Here they call it Kronic I think. It's not the actual leaves or herbs they put this **** on, but the chemical JWH081 I think it is. It's initials for the scientist that developed all these if you will fake weed receptors or how they bind or something like that. Put it this way if I can't explain it I sure wouldn't smoke it.
