A couple arrested Wednesday and charged in the death of the woman's 3-year-old son lied to police about calling a medical hotline for advice, gave conflicting reasons for the boy's bruises and had also been under investigation by Child Protective Services, according to arrest warrant affidavits.
Janie Altamirano and her boyfriend Michael Pastran, both 23, were charged with injury to a child, serious bodily injury by omission, a first-degree felony. A judge set bail for each at $100,000.
............................
Altamirano and Pastran were dating at the time and said they didn't know how the injuries occurred. CPS determined Altamirano was “insufficient as a caregiver” and removed Ethan and his brother until September.
CPS spokeswoman Mary Walker said the agency had concerns but “did not object in open court to the judge's order” returning Ethan and his brother to Altamirano. She declined to discuss details of the CPS investigation but said case workers and others believed “the mom was not ready to take the child back” but there was no record “that indicates we expressed that, though, directly to the judge.” :furious:
