Human Skull Found On Useless Bay Beach

A skull that was found on Whidbey Island in November is likely from a homicide victim, the King County medical examiner's office says.

The skull was found on November 26 by two people walking along Useless Bay near Maxwelton Road, the Island County Sheriff's Office said. One of the people took the skull home to Mercer Island and kept it in a garage. The skull was turned over to Mercer Island police on February 2 and subsequently given to the medical examiner's office.

Skull with hatchet marks found on beach

A human skull found last fall washed up on a beach had signs of trauma caused by a hatchet or axe, leading detectives to believe the person was brutally murdered.

The skull came from a younger male, under 35-years-old, with time of death up to 10 years ago, according to a forensic anthropologist.

The skull's condition indicates that it did not spend any significant time in the water and most likely washed down the beach to the water line from the prior day's high tide. It is unclear whether a body may have washed up on the beach or a body was discarded in the area.

Law enforcement conducted an initial foot search of the beach on February 10 and will return with Cadaver search dogs in an attempt to find additional remains.

Police say one of the women was unsure of the nature of the remains and wanted to keep it. She returned home and packed away the cranium in her garage. Mercer Island Police Detective Pete Erickson said the woman had forgotten about the skull fragment until she read a story in the Mercer Island Reporter concerning the discovery of a human skull in an estate sale. She turned the skull over to Mercer Island Police on Feb. 2.

According to the press release, King County forensic anthropologist Dr. Kathy Taylor performed an analysis on the skull and said in a preliminary finding that the skull came from a male under 35 years old who died up to 10 years earlier. Island County sheriff's detective Ed Wallace said the skull was damaged in two distinct areas by a sharp object—possibly by an ax, hatchet or machete, indicating the man was a homicide victim.

The medical examiner is attempting to gather a DNA sample from the remains, but using only bone fragments may make that difficult, said King County spokesperson James Apa. Due to the skull missing the lower portions of the face and jaw, no reconstruction of the head is possible at this point, Apa said.

"If more of the skull could be located that may allow us to get more info about who this person might be," he said. "It's also important to note that DNA analysis takes a long time—and might not be successful."

Mercer Island Detective Pete Erickson lamented the fact that so little of the remains had been found and the identity may never be determined.

Any on this case yet, my best guess is Brian Barton. It's a bit odd nothing has come of this not even a composite.

Brian Barton was found deceased a while ago, maybe a couple years? If I remember correctly he was found super close to where he went missing.

Another skull was found over the weekend, but has been identified:

Hunter finds skull on Whidbey Island belonging to man reported missing in 2000

The skull was found by the hunter while walking in a wooded area in the 3300 block of Smugglers Cove Road on Oct. 12, 2019. Dental records revealed that the skull belonged to Carl Jesberg, who was reported missing on Dec. 23, 2000 and had left his wife a suicide note. Several searches for Jesberg were conducted in 2001, but he was never located.
