Colleen MacMillen, 16, was last seen on Aug. 9, 1974 in Lac La Hache, B.C. She was believed to be hitchhiking and is on the Highway of Tears list. Her body was found Sept. 4, 1974 near 100 Mile House.

A former Kamloops detective got excited about a possible break in the murder of Colleen Rae MacMillen, 16, when a U.S. man confessed to killing her.

MacMillen’s body had been found on a logging road about 25 kilometres south of 100 Mile House about a month after the she went missing in 1974.

But the man changed the details of how the murder was carried out, and police later concluded it was a bogus confession, said Ken Leibel.

The suspect, Edwin Henry Foster, 19, made the confession while serving an eight-year sentence for a gas station robbery. He hanged himself in a Washington state prison in 1976.

The prospect of resolution fizzled into yet another frustrating dead end in the unsolved murder of Colleen MacMillen.

On Aug. 9, 1974 Colleen had decided to hitchhike to her girlfriend's house in the town of Lac La Hache, about six kilometres from where she lived. She never arrived.

The frantic family had no answers until one month later when her body was found beside a logging road about 25 kilometres south of 100 Mile House.

Kevin, who is now 48 and married with three children, never stops thinking about his sister.

"I often think about what she would be like now. She'd have kids and would be happy."

It was hard to watch Colleen's brother, to see the pain that still exists for loved ones after almost 40 years. I hope this discovery can at least bring their family some peace, and that E-Pana will have continued success in their ongoing investigations so that other families can know what happened and who is responsible for their missing and murdered family members.

May he rot in hell !!!!!!

Yeah, hopefully he's rotting but I kind of agree with her brother that spoke about Fowler not having to answer/stand trial for Colleen's murder so in a way it's too bad he's already dead.

Her brother spoke for a few minutes at the press conference and even after all these years it was very emotional for him. I also don't think the family ever thought it would be solved, I think he used the word "stunned" at the beginning...

Couldn't help but notice Gary Shinkaruk standing behind Colleen's brother Shawn as he spoke, swallowing hard to control emotion, and speaking reassuredly to him when he had finished. These officers have such a hard time with these cases, and my heart goes out to them as well.

Thank you and hugs to E-Pana !!

It was interesting to hear that the DNA was submitted to Interpol and that is how the match to Fowler came about. After all these years, I wonder what prompted LE to finally go through Interpol, and have to wonder why this can't be done in a shorter timeframe in the future.

Glad to hear that it was finally solved, this case especially caught my eye because it was so similar to the case I’m delving into now... only three days apart!

Do tell us which case you are delving into.
