GUILTY TX - Braylan Hood, 5 wks, dies with broken neck, Conroe, 14 March 2011

A Conroe couple, accused of shaking their 5-week-old son with their hands, remain in the Montgomery County Jail after the baby died Saturday and was found to have suffered a broken neck, police said.

Denette Elizabeth Williams, 23, and Jimmie Preston Hood, 22, were both charged Tuesday with injury to a child, a first-degree felony offense. Criminal complaints accuse the couple of seriously injuring their baby boy, Braylon Hood. Both parents are being held in lieu of $250,000 bail each.

Jimmie Preston Hood, 23, faced up to 99 years or life in prison for the first-degree felony charge of injury to a child, Braylan, by omission. Hours after jurors convicted Hood in the 221st state District Court of Judge Lisa Michalk, they sentenced him to seven years of probation.

Four and a half months ago, Braylan’s mother, Dennette Williams, represented by renowned Houston attorney George Parnham, also was convicted of first-degree felony to a child by omission. Jurors then sentenced her to 15 years in prison.

Braylan had injuries that included a broken neck, broken ribs, ligature marks around his neck and arm and a subduram hematoma of the brain. Instead of taking Braylan to a doctor or emergency room, both Hood and Williams kept him strapped in a car seat without feeding him or changing his diaper, prosecutors said.
