Detectives say they're unsure if foul play is involved in the disappearance of a Shelbyville man.

Bobby Smelcer, 52, of East Lane Trailer Park, was last seen at his home at approximately 4:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, his sister, Karen Harris, said.

"He has not been seen or heard from since," Harris said. "We are very concerned and hope someone will come forward if they have seen Bobby or have any information as to his whereabouts."

A pistol was found Monday in a wooded area on East Depot Street, Shelbyville police said.

The Beretta .380 caliber gun was approximately 100 yards south of the street in a wooded area west of the VFW building by a man who told police he was searching for Bobby Smelcer, who has been missing since November.

At the epicenter of missing persons cases are members of law enforcement.
From the initial report, to the days, months -- even years -- that follow, detectives with the Shelbyville police and the Bedford County sheriff's departments become the contact point for the families' questions -- and frustrations.

Gov. Bill Haslam offered rewards Tuesday in three separate criminal cases involving Tennessee women, including a $10,000 reward in the case of Shelbyville teacher Shelley Mook.

But the announcement was bittersweet for the families of two other missing persons from Shelbyville. Bobby Smelcer, 52, went missing last November. Antonio Taylor, 21, hasn't been seen since September 1999.

Donated billboard keeps missing persons in view

A national organization has donated a billboard featuring photos of Shelbyville's Missing.

Installed near the 1200 block of Madison Street facing east, the photos of Bobby Smelcer, Antonio Taylor and Shelley Jones Mook remind drivers of the families who continue to search for their missing loved ones.

'Never give up': Rally keeps hope for missing residents alive

The raindrops that began falling as balloons were released at a rally for Bedford County's missing persons Sunday seemed perfectly appropriate.

Tears from heaven, one might say.

"We have to try to find any leads," Kristy Smelcer said. The skull of her brother, Bobby Smelcer, was found last spring in Duck River rest of Shelbyville. He had been reported missing from his home in November 2010. No other evidence has been found.

Kristy Matheson is a perfect example of how to turn tragedy into hope. After her brother, Bobby Smelcer, went missing Nov. 21, 2010 and his partial skull was found on April 16, 2013, she decided to use her experience to move forward -- in a big way.

Matheson has not only earned a degree from ITT Technical Institute in criminology -- which includes criminal justice and forensics -- she is graduating with a 4.0 average...

She has already had job offers from law enforcement and investigation agencies... Matheson's heart, however, lies with her new foundation... The Holman Smelcer foundation will work with families with missing loved ones as well as work to bring awareness to laws concerning missing and unsolved cases in an effort to set more effective procedures in handling missing person cases.

Shelbyville Missing
In an average year, two or three persons go missing in our state. That two are missing within four months of each other, three overall - and in a town the size of Shelbyville -- it becomes a statistical anomaly. This series of articles details the investigation and the frustration of the families with unanswered questions. Antonio Taylor, then 21, has been missing since Sept. 20, 1999. Bobby Smelcer, then 52, went missing Nov. 21, 2010. Shelley Mook, then 24, was last seen Feb. 28.bbm

Questions remain after Shelbyville man's skull discovered along Duck River

More than a decade after his disappearance, the rest of Smelcer’s remains have never been found.

“It would be so good for our family to finally get justice for Bobby. I don’t even know how to put that in words. I have wanted that for so long, it would just mean the world to us,” Matheson said. “I hope this lays this on their heart of whoever’s listening to do the right thing.”
