Denny Ross Trial Begins In Springfield

Prosecution, Defense Make Opening Statements

POSTED: 5:02 p.m. EDT October 17, 2000

The trial for Denny Ross began Tuesday in Springfield as the prosecution and defense made their opening statements, NewsChannel5's Jonathan Costen reported.

Ross is accused of murdering Hannah Hill in the spring of last year.

Eighteen months ago, Hill's dead body was found stuffed in the trunk of her car on a quiet Akron road.

Ross, who is looking at a capital murder charge for allegedly killing Hill, has hired a stable of high-priced attorneys. The prosecutors, meanwhile, have never even tried a murder case. In Tuesday's opening arguments, prosecutor Brian Loprinzi told jurors that Ross killed Hill by choking her to death. He said that an autopsy report indicated that Hill was beaten on her head and face, and that traces of sulfur and carbon were found in her facial wounds.

Thank you for that link. By the way, what is the significance of finding sulfur
and carbon in her facial wounds?

The cast that Denny Ross was wearing is made out of materials that contain sulfur and carbon, thus making it likely that the blows to her face and head were made by his cast.

How sad, what a mess of a case. There is enough to provide doubt, I suppose, if not for me. I think that his blood on her clothes is important...it stinks that it could not be presented to the jury. I do think he is guilty. But I don't think they can prove it.

Back when they had Denny's Original trial, former Judge Jane Bond declared a mistrial because one of the jurors I believe read a newspaper article about the case and told other jurors information about the case that was not included at trial.

AND...... The jurors had already signed the doc aqutting Denny of ALL charges If not for the Judge he would be a free man.

Charges of aggravated murder, rape and kidnapping from the first Summit County trial of Denny Ross have been removed in a new indictment in connection with his second trial for the 1999 slaying of Hannah Hill.

In a supplemental indictment handed down by a Summit County grand jury Thursday, Ross now faces a series of lesser, but still serious charges: two counts of murder, felonious assault, tampering with evidence and abuse of a corpse.

Denny Ross made an early appearance at the Summit County courthouse Friday.

Even his attorney, Larry Whitney, had no clear explanation for it, telling Common Pleas Judge Judy Hunter that Ross “somehow made his way back here for this hearing,” despite a defense motion filed in early July to waive Ross’ right to appear.

Afterward, Ross’ father, Allen Ross of Springfield Township, said his son was brought back early to the county jail as a trick by investigators in the long-running Hannah Hill murder case.
