0. The Leo Frank Case (Mary Phagan) Inside Story of Georgia's Greatest Murder Mystery 1913 - The first neutral book written on the subject. Very interesting read.

1. The Murder of Little Mary Phagan by Mary Phagan Kean (Available here on www.Archive.org). Written by Mary Phagan Kean, the great grand niece of Mary Phagan. A neutral account of the events surrounding the trial of Leo Frank. The Murder of Little Mary Phagan is well worth reading and it is a refreshing change from the endless number of Jewish and contemporary books turning the Leo Frank case into a neurotic race obsessed tabloid controversy.

2. American State Trials, volume X (1918) by John Lawson (Available here on www.Archive.org and LeoFrank.org) Tends to be biased in favor of Leo Frank and his legal defense team, this document provides an abridged version of the Brief of Evidence, leaving out some important things said and details when it republishes parts of the trial testimony. Be sure to read the closing arguments of Luther Zeigler Rosser, Reuben Rose Arnold, Frank Arthur Hooper and Hugh Manson Dorsey. For a more complete version of the Leo M. Frank trial testimony, read the 1913 murder trial brief of evidence found on www.LeoFrank.org and you can see what was left out.

3. Argument of Hugh M. Dorsey in the Trial of Leo Frank (Available here on www.archive.org and www.LeoFrank.org). Some but not all of the 9 hours of arguments given to the Jury at the end of the Leo Frank trial. Only 18 Libraries in the world have copies of this books. It can be found here on archive.org thanks to leofrank.org. This is an excellent book and required reading to see how Dorsey in sales vernacular 'closed' a Jury of 12 men and Judge Roan.

I have not read this book but a couple others about this killing.

My conclusion after what I have read is that there is a good chance that Frank did indeed kill the girl. I think he may have been a secretive, obsessed man who was exposed to young girls under his control and may have killed Mary Phagan quite accidently. I know that goes against a lot of the traditional views of the case. I don't think hisn being Jewish had a thing to do withn it.

I've read a number of books over many years about the Mary Phagan rape/murder case. My opinion is that Frank hurt her in some way as she struggled against his advances. He then had to kill her to keep her from talking/telling. Whether or not he raped her at all or before, during or after she died, I don't really know; but I'm convinced Conley raped her after she was dead. Probably after he took her down to the basement to dispose of her as Frank allegedly ordered him to do.

Sadly this is one of those situations with so much emotion involved that it impedes any rational investigation. Most authors who have written about it do so from the assumption Frank was an innocent man, railroaded because of prejudice. There certainly was a lot of it in Atlanta at the time and much of the news coverage was disgraceful and inflammatory. Frank's terrible death and the justified outrage felt in the North over it have tended to cloud a lot of the issues.
I think after nearly a hundred years we should be able to have some objectivity, without the politically correct accusations made at people who think Frank was guilty as charged.

I don't know that Leo Frank was hated so much because he was Jewish but because he was considered a Carpetbagger. There doesn't seem to have been much anti-Semitism as much as today's press would have us believe but there was certainly distaste for Northerners coming South to make their fortunes off child labor. There were 3 or 4 Jewish businessmen on either the grand jury or the trial jury who believed him guilty. The press of the time printed photos of him that were so unflattering, making him look like a bug eyed sex maniac or a dimwit. Only recently have I seen photos of him in college and outside the courthouse that were probably suppressed at the time. These photos show a very handsome young man but that wouldn't have fit the image they wanted. Still doesn't make him innocent though. One new thing that bothers me is Alonzo Mann coming forward after all those decades (he was in his 80's) saying he saw Conley carrying Mary's body towards the elevator. That wasn't new info; Conley testified at the trial that he carried her over his shoulder while Frank went upstairs to send the elevator down. Makes me wonder about Mann's motives. Was he being paid by some organization? Did he have the burden of guilt on him? Was he considered a suspect at any time before LE homed in on Frank? Mann admitted he had been there at the factory that day and puts himself there at the time the murder was happening. Sadly, everyone has passed on, taking the truth with them.
