A prescription drug addiction may have been a factor in the shooting of a Tiffin Township family and the eventual shooting of the shooting suspect by Columbus police Saturday morning. One eight-year-old girl was left unharmed in the family's home south of West Union and went to a neighbor's house after finding her family deceased, according to a report from the Adams County Sheriff's Office.

Really good article on the tragedy at the home.

snip....Investigators learned Roberts had told the girl Friday night she could sleep in her own room and he'd take the couch instead.

snip....Investigators believe they were shot with a semiautomatic weapon but still are evaluating evidence. Roberts had a concealed-carry permit from Franklin County that had expired in January, authorities said.

Dang it I grew up there!

HEY!! THAT'S WHAT I WAS COMING IN HERE TO SAY!

But so that only you and I will understand, I'll say it this way:

We wuz down innat 'air parta thestate, aw its not bin too long. we wuz comin from guernsey county, and we says this'ere parta thestate is jest like home. youins know whut we mean. its cows an' trees annat. Ts' purty.

That little tri-state area of SE Ohio, WVA, KY, and really, 4th PA, has been hurting long, long into the past. But since oxycontin hit there, it's been worse even than when it was meth.

I was a teenager there in the 70s, and even back then I swear I saw more drugs than I did for the next two decades in southern California.

There is nothing to do there except drink and use. Unemployment is some of the highest in the country. The genetic strains have a high incidence for alcoholism too.

I feel so sad for that little 8yo girl. I had a foster daughter for 2 years that I brought here from there. Her father, my childhood best friend, went to prison for drugs. Her mother was already in there. She's doing okay now, back with other members of her family, but she is one child among so many that are being raised in the land of no opportunity.

West Union gunman vowed no surrender

snip....George Payne, the father of Roberts' estranged wife, Tiffany Walters, has an idea as to why he spared Mariah's life. "He always liked Mariah," George said. "I think he was always fond of her. But we never thought he was capable of something like this. He was always a very smart and talented person. This is a side of Randle that nobody's every seen before."

"She would have given anybody the shirt off her back, even if she didn't have it," Tamieka Rueppel said of Kendra Stephens, age 34. Rueppel graduated with Kendra from the Basic Peace Officers Training Program at Southern State Community College in April of 2007 under the auspices of the Greenfield Police Department.
