Military expert: Pakistan must have known where Osama bin Laden was hiding

t1larg.pakistan.military.cnn.jpg

Pakistani Police guard the sealed main gate of the bin Laden compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan on Tuesday, May 3, 2011

...Based on those years of knowledge, she is convinced the military knew bin Laden was there. That he was hiding near Pakistan's military academy in Abbottabad is the strongest clue, she says.

In a society where the military and intelligence agencies keep tabs on its citizens, Pakistan would not allow anyone living so close to its elite military academy to go unexamined, she says....

IMO, it's obvious they knew. They may have been afraid of becoming targets if they turned Bin Laden over.

Oh, they knew. Pakistan is famous for playing both ends against the middle. I think the US needs to cut off the billion or two a year that we give them. Maybe that will bring them around to the correct way of thinking about the Taliban and Al Queda.

No doubt in my mind they knew he was there.

And if we would have told them we were gonna raid, he would not have been there.
They have tipped him off several times before.

IMO the reason he felt so safe there for YEARS is because he thought he would be warned before anybody stepped foot on that compound.

He was wrong!

What a photo. Such focus and tension.

The shot of Hilary says it all.

They were holding their breaths hoping against hope that we got our target without any US casualties.

Not taking anything from this photo, because I do think it is a great photo.

But, I heard on the radio this morning that Hill Clinton said she was most likely not reacting to what she saw/heard but she was probably trying to hold in a "spring time allergy sneeze" (or did she say cough???).

I'll see what I can find.

I really think she should have left it alone and let people think she was reacting to the tension of the situation. Sounds much better than a sneeze or a cough.

"I am somewhat sheepishly concerned that it was my preventing one of my early spring allergic coughs. So it may have no great meaning whatsoever," Clinton added.

and ... here is the rest of her quote about the photograph - same source.

"Those were 38 of the most intense minutes," Clinton said of the raid on bin Laden's compound by U.S. Navy SEALs. "I have no idea what any of us were looking at at that particular millisecond when the picture was taken."

She makes a good point - I bet she's even tougher to ruffle than she used to be.

I think everything we're hearing from the media is speculation. They just debriefed the team and I doubt if anything has been released. I can only speculate just like everyone else, but I think Secretary Clinton was reacting to the helicopter crash. That could have been the end to it all. It is a good photo, and a lot of eye witnesses.

We can't completely cut them off, I think we should not give them any more weapons at all. We should continue to help them rebuild schools for the children and hospitals for the sick and wounded. We need to keep verbal relationships open with their government, and continue to let them know that if they harbor terrorist in their country, that we will step in if needed and whatever is needed to be done will be.

I think this may have already been brought up, but photos were released of some other dudes (blood, gore, and all). What's the diff in seeing OBL's photo? Why is the US holding him to a higher standard.

Don't get it - don't get it at all.

I agree they knew (or at least some of them), but the billions we send them aren't a gift. We're paying for fly-over access to support our troops in Afghanistan. And to prop up the unpopular military dictatorship that rules Pakistan and provides a counterbalance to Iran.

We know the Pakistanis can't be trusted; that's why we didn't tell them about the raid in advance. But Pakistan is our proxy in that part of the world and we don't have a substitute.

(Trust me: we don't send billions to Islamabad out of love.)

I think it is just that, the Bin Laden family are very influential in Saudi Arabia, we do hold him to a higher standard.

"As of February 2010, al-Qa'ida was allegedly contemplating conducting an operation against trains at an unspecified location in the United States on the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001," the document reads, using an alternate spelling for bin Laden's terror group. "As one option, al-Qa'ida was looking into trying to tip a train by tampering with the rails so that the train would fall off the track at either a valley or a bridge."

I'm not sure but I think the Pakistani government is the one who released the photos of the other men. Not the US military.

Probably. But I think that Hillary has always been a tough cookie. ;)

Allergy sniffles or not, that is one heck of a picture! :)

Well turn the situation around. Do you think that there would be a more intense reaction from the American people if pictures of a murdered president were released versus pictures of a president's couriers?

edit... I think that we have to keep in mind that these pictures were not released by America. We did not put them out there. I think that they were taken and sold by a Pakistani.

New details: The Seals faced gunfire for almost the entire time of the operation, but the virtual video shows only a group of Seals firing in the open outside the compound. The gunfire stopped only when they burst into bin Laden's room (only OBL and his wife in room).

Clearly, it appears the only gunfire is by the Seals. Now, I do not have a problem with this, nor the way the operation was carried out. I just wish the Administration would say so. What's to hide? It's obvious. IMO, this may be more about not offending some Americans.

Also, video report says they believe bin Laden was dyeing his beard to hide the gray. Well, maybe he did get out every now and then.

Do we know that they are trying to hide something? I really hope they aren't either.

Maybe its just because the information is being released slowly, we don't know if things are being held back to hide them of they just haven't been released yet.

I'm watching my recording of Vinnie and he is saying that only one of OBL'S men had a gun. I'm not watching as close as I should, but I'm assuming that this information is out there because it has been released by the govt.

BBM I agree. If he wanted to surrender, he had almost 10 YEARS to do so.
