ONTARIO, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman was found pushing a trash can down a street in Ontario with a body inside, and authorities told Eyewitness News that the body had been dismembered.

The woman has been arrested, and now investigators are digging for clues in the backyard of a home where the suspect was staying.

A 51-year-old woman accused of pushing a trash can containing a man's body parts in Ontario reportedly had spent hours asking for help disposing of the parts.

Police were called when a resident in the neighborhood smelled an odor coming from the can. The woman was arrested on suspicion of murder, Ontario police said.

Carmen Montenegro was taken into custody after residents in the 700 block of Holmes Street spotted her pushing a trash can with body parts in it and alerted police about 3 p.m Sunday, said Det. Jeff Crittenden.

Montenegro was later booked on suspicion of murder, Crittenden said. The trash can contained parts of a man's body and investigators from the department and the county coroner’s office are searching for the other remains.

A woman found pushing a trash bin that contained human body parts down an Ontario street over the weekend might have met the victim online and dated him.

The victim, who was last seen by relatives on May 1, had been reported as a missing person to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, according said Ontario police Det. Jeff Crittenden.

The victim's sister-in-law said the man met Carmen Montenegro online about a year ago and the two had lived together on and off. She said he lived in Diamond Bar and described him as a "veteran, a loner, but a great and generous guy."

She went around asking for help disposing of the body parts? Really???? And nobody turned her in for that, not until they smelled the odor?

Authorities said today that that the dismembered corpse found in a woman's trash can in Ontario may be her former boyfriend -- a 63-year-old Diamond Bar man who was reported missing by his family May 1.

Police and prosecutors declined to name the missing man because they haven't confirmed the identity of the remains.

The San Bernardino County District Attorney's Office charged Carmen Montenegro today with murdering a man identified in a complaint as "John Doe."

Montenegro, 51, was arrested Sunday after she allegedly exhumed a dismembered corpse from the backyard of a home in the 700 block of North Holmes Avenue in Ontario, then pushed a trash can containing the remains 200 yards along residential streets.

Montenegro, of San Bernardino, pleaded not guilty to murder this afternoon during a brief arraignment in West Valley Superior Court in Rancho Cucamonga.

Judge Michael Libutti set Montenegro's bail at $1 million, and scheduled her next court hearing for Thursday, when she may argue for reduced bail.

Montenegro said during the hearing that she feels $1 million bail is too high.

"That's not reasonable for me because I don't work," she said.

Getting even more bizarre. First he was buried, then dug up and she went to neighbors and asked for help getting rid of the remains???

Guilty concious maybe? Or is this one another case with mental issues?

from the article l linked above:

According to Montenegro's cousin, who was at the home in the 700 block of North Holmes Avenue during the incident, Montenegro arrived at the home with two day laborers at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

About a month ago, Montenegro dug several large holes in the home's backyard as part of what she described as a gardening project, said the cousin, Matthew Bell.

Bell said that on Sunday, Montenegro exhumed a body from the rear corner of the backyard and loaded the remains into a wheeled trash can.

The two day laborers left, and Montenegro asked Bell and others for help. They refused, left the home and walked north on Holmes Avenue.

Montenegro followed them, still dragging the trash can behind her, Bell said. She was arrested about 200 yards away from the home.

Sometimes I don't know about the Media..:waitasec: On the local news they say a woman is seen pushing a garbage dumpster and they find a dismembered body of a man in the can and they are going to consider it a homicide?? What else would it be?

Victim identified; suspect's two children arrested

ONTARIO, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was identified as the dismembered body discovered in a trash can pushed by a woman in Ontario Sunday.

Diamond Bar resident Samuel Wiggins Jr., 63, was identified as the man, Ontario police said Wednesday night.

Ontario detectives had searched the residence of Wiggins Tuesday night on the 23700 block of Meadow Fall Drive in Diamond Bar.

On Wednesday investigators searched a residence on the 6000 block of Foster Bridge Rd. in Bell Gardens. Police found additional body parts in two large flower pots, according to the Ontario department.

The San Bernardino County Coroner found that body parts found in the trash can Sunday and at the Bell Gardens residence Wednesday belonged to Wiggins.

Police said the entire body of Wiggins had been recovered.

Wiggins had been reported missing on May 1 to the L.A. County Sheriff's Dept.

Carmen Montenegro, 51, was arrested Sunday after neighbors reported her to police when she was seen wheeling a trash can containing human remains. Wiggins is a past boyfriend of Montenegro's.

Ontario Police arrested two children of Montenegro's, Riverside residents Daniel Ortiz, 25, and Chanel Ortiz, 26, as accessories in the murder of Wiggins. They were arrested during a traffic stop by Ontario officers Wednesday and booked as accessories to murder.

Police believe the suspect, whose real name is Carmen Montelongo, stabbed Samuel Wiggins to death and then dismembered him, probably at his Diamond Bar home. They have also arrested the son and daughter of Montelongo as accessories to murder. Her son is suspected of helping her deliver two large flower pots to relatives in Bell Gardens on Mother's Day, with the head and arms of the victim hidden in the pots. Incredible.

No charges to be filed against son, daughter of woman who allegedly hid body parts in flower pots

...Montenegro, whose legal last name is Montelongo but was booked under Montenegro, was arrested Sunday after allegedly exhuming body parts she had buried in a cousin’s backyard in Ontario and tried to dump them in a bin outside a nearby house.

But watchful neighbors alerted authorities, who discovered the body minus the head and arms.

David Hidalgo, a San Bernardino County supervising deputy district attorney, said the victim’s body was sawed into pieces.

Part of it was buried in the yard of the Ontario home, and the head and arms were taken to Bell Gardens, authorities said.

“She put the head in one flower pot and arms in another flower pot, filled them with potting soil and then delivered them to a relative’s home in Bell Gardens,” Hidalgo said.

Wiggins’ family reported him missing May 1. Neighbors told authorities Montenegro was seen going in and out of his Diamond Bar home after he disappeared.

Montenegro allegedly used his credit cards, his ATM card and his car after his disappearance.

This case is finally starting to move along. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for August 30, 2012. Montelongo is being held without bail.

I searched San Bernardino County Courts:

Wouldn't it have been easier to just kill him at her place? That way he'd only have to be buried once and she could have skipped wheeling his dismembered body around.

The judge declared a mistrial as jury selection was underway in January.
The reason has not been disclosed. There was supposed to be a restart of the trial in February, but that didn't happen.

From a search of court records, there is a pre-trial hearing scheduled tomorrow, and a Jury Trial set for May 12th. I'll try to keep things updated.

Okay, it looks like the trial started earlier this week. I hope there's not another mistrial at the end of this. It's frustrating to see the system stagger along like this.
