Then, after a nearly hour-long pursuit that ended in Montgomery County, the deputy was stopped by police gunfire — after a state trooper was wounded and the resulting investigation shut down a northbound section of Interstate 81 for hours.
 
How sad. One of their two children was in the vehicle with her mom.

May she rest in peace. That's unimaginable.

News7 contacted Franklin County Sheriff Ewell Hunt by phone and learned more about the moments leading up to a fatal shooting at the Sheetz station in Roanoke on Memorial Day. Sheriff Hunt says he had an indication that morning that Deputy Jonathan Agee planned to harm his ex-wife Jennifer Agee.

ROANOKE, Va. — A Franklin County dispatcher told Roanoke police that Sheriff Ewell Hunt directed her not to mention a deputy's threats to kill his ex-wife, according to a transcript of the call released by the city police.

The conversation occurred Monday, moments after Jennifer Agee, 30, was shot to death outside a Roanoke convenience store. Franklin County Deputy Jonathan Agee, who was shot and wounded later by state police, has been charged with murder. Family members had told the sheriff's office that Agee had left his Boones Mill home to kill his ex-wife.

The Roanoke Times reports that Hunt told his dispatcher not to issue a "be on the lookout" alert for Agee, according to his office's dispatch log, and left a phone message with police in Salem, where he thought Agee was headed, that hinted of no urgency.

The call that Franklin County Sheriff Ewell Hunt placed to a Salem Police Department dispatcher -- in the minutes before Jennifer Agee was shot to death on Memorial Day -- betrayed no sense of the crisis he was attempting to defuse, the Salem police chief said Wednesday.

"When he called dispatch at 11:18, he basically wanted to talk to a patrol supervisor," said Salem Chief Jeff Dudley.

Hunt identified himself as law enforcement when he called, Dudley said, but "there was no sense of urgency, and he did not indicate that there was any kind of emergency."

But Hunt did have an emergency. Dispatch logs show he was acting on a 911 call from the wife of Franklin County sheriff's Deputy Jonathan Agee, who had told the county sheriff's office her husband was on his way to Salem, armed with an assault rifle, to kill his ex-wife, Jennifer.

I don't even know what to say...this reminds me of the poor woman in Tacoma (I can't think of her name but I can even picture her) who was murdered by her husband, the chief of police...in a parking lot in front of her kids....and records showed he never should have been a cop, let alone police chief.
 
The deaths were a tragedy but what the chief did was unconscionable!! He possibly could have prevented this. Why would this man do this??
 
Why would the chief do what he did? Actually it isn't unusual. The chief knew the deputy and identified with him. Probably liked him. Probably didn't think he would follow through.

Thinking there would probably be an argument but the deputy wouldn't actually kill his ex, the chief probably thought if he began the action he wouldn't be able to stop charges from being filed against the deputy. If charges were filed, the deputy would most likely lose his ability to carry a weapon, and without a weapon he lose his job, the county would lose a good deputy. All over what the chief probably thought of as a "family argument."

Probably the chief was trying to locate the deputy so he could talk to him and get him defused. Though if he was in the crusier I don't know why he didn't use the radio.

The chief probably saw the deputy as a good deputy, calm and cool on the job, a law abiding person who followed the rules.

What the chief didn't take into account was this wasn't a part of the job. This was about years of disagreements and lots of emotions, anger that was escalating to rage.
He didn't take into consideration that deputies and husbands are often different people, at least as far as their actions go. And he totally forgot that any angry person with a gun is a dangerous person, no matter what their previous history was.

I agree with the local citizens who are trying to get him out of office. He ignored all the procedures for dealing with domestic violence, he trusted in a deputy over safety and it got a woman killed.

Hunt kept him on even after Agee allegedly had a thing going on with Hunt's teen daughter???? And took her on stakeouts and stuff?? That plus this, now it is beginning to get hinky.

Please tell me this is not why this poor lady was murdered. The couple has two daughter's. Each parent had custody of a daughter.

There was no record of any violence at all between the couple.

Now there's a 7 year old and a 12 year old without their mom or dad.

Interesting comment on page two. Says that the judge that ordered the child support was an uncle of Agee's. And that the child support she had to pay was $900 a month. Said she was a mother, a student and a waitress.

I had thought that the arrearage was pretty high for a couple where each of them had one of the children.

I guess my asking whether he would be so quick to protect his deputy... if it was his OWN daughter threatened... might not be a point worth making then? :banghead:

The man's CURRENT wife called and said he was going to go kill his EX WIFE.

His CURRENT wife reported this.

Not an angry ex... not a neighbor... his WIFE.

The Chief could have called a trusted deputy, or gotten himself in his car... turned on the lights and sirens and RUSHED to the ex wife's home. To ensure nothing happened. He could have called her on the way to warn her... I am guessing the current wife had her cell phone number.

No need to "taint" the man's reputation.

No need to cause him to lose his job.

No need to be tied into pressing charges.

Thank you to the wife for trying to do the right thing. I'm sorry that law enforcement failed to assist you.
