Body found under bed in Salt Lake motel

SALT LAKE CITY — A body was found inside a bed frame under a mattress at the Capitol Motel early Thursday, according to Salt Lake City police.

Hotel staffers called police about 2:15 a.m. after a member of the cleaning staff found the body in room 12 of the hotel, 1749 S. State, said police Sgt. Shawn Josephson.

"There were definite suspicious circumstances," he said.

Police have not said whether there were signs of trauma to the body or what may have caused the person's death. There was no sign of a struggle in the room.

Lt. David Cracroft with the Salt Lake City Police Department said, "It's just the positioning of the body that is suspicious, so we're treating this as more than just an overdose."

Sophia Salas checked into that motel room Wednesday night, but said the stench in the room almost knocked her out. She returned to the motel manager and demanded a different room because of the smell

Man arrested after Layton woman's body found under mattress in motel

SALT LAKE CITY — A woman found under a mattress at a Salt Lake motel may have been dead four or five days before her body was discovered.

The woman was identified Friday as Jessica Irene Jensen, of Layton. According to court records, her 26th birthday would have been Monday, when she may already have been dead.

Salt Lake police have arrested a man and booked him into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of murder in connection with Jensen's death.

Thursday, detectives announced they were looking for Thomas Kumalac, 28, for questioning to find out what he knew about a woman's body found in Room 12 at the Capitol Motel, 1749 S. State.

The state medical examiner believes Jensen had been dead four to five days before her body was found early Thursday, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

Investigators found Kumalac late Thursday as he allegedly tried to flee to Wendover. Detectives took him in for questioning. Just after 2 a.m. Friday, police announced he had been arrested in her death.

"He admitted to actively causing her death," the report states.

Very beautiful young lady..... I am so sorry

How very sad. So young. Jessica may you rest in peace.

It appears Kumalac is from Jersey. At some point he was looking for his birth parents as he was adopted out of Korea.

Why murder someone you are supposed to love and near her birthday?
