Let's give Kudos to Time Warner Cable, who is launching a Missing Kids on Demand Channel in Texas. It is very cool that technology is being used in this way! Hopefully, we will see this networking across, not only other TWC systems soon, but other computer/TV services as well. (Dish Service, U-Verse, Internet, NetFlix.)

TIME WARNER CABLE IN TEXAS LAUNCHES ON DEMAND CATEGORY TO SHARE INFORMATION ON MISSING CHILDREN TO MILLIONS IN TEXAS

TWC Partners with National Center for Missing & Exploited Children to launch program on eve of
National Missing Children’s Day

Austin – May 23, 2011 – Every year an estimated 800,000 children are reported as missing in the United States. In recognition of National Missing Children’s Day on May 25, Time Warner Cable is announcing today the launch of a new Missing Children On Demand category available via their Local On Demand channels, making information about missing children available to millions of Time Warner Cable digital video customers across the state of Texas. The new initiative is in partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) and will enable Time Warner Cable digital video customers in Texas to support efforts by law enforcement to help bring missing children home.

“Someone out there knows something and we hope the people of Texas will view these videos and help bring our children home,” said Ernie Allen, President and CEO of National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. “Our partnership with Time Warner Cable enables us to reach millions of homes throughout Texas and empowers viewers with the resources they need to help solve cases.”

“We have a great track record of success with our Local On Demand public service initiatives, including our Crime Stoppers On Demand programs,” said Jon Gary Herrera, vice president of communications with Time Warner Cable. “This initiative will expand the reach of the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children and local law enforcement agencies in their relentless efforts to find missing children and reunite loved ones.”

Time Warner Cable Missing Children On Demand videos, produced in partnership with the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children, will feature up to 10 new video profiles a month chronicling missing child cases from across the United States. Each video provides relevant details about the child’s case, including the name of the missing child, city of the disappearance, possible whereabouts, as well as likely abductors and photos. In cases where the child has been missing for a long period, an age progressed photo showing what he/she may look like at a more recent age will also be available. In addition, during the airing of each profile, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s toll-free 24-hour national missing children’s hotline (800-THE-LOST) will be displayed on the bottom of the profile, so viewers can report tips should they have any information. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children’s website will also be available for viewers to report tips online at www.missingkids.com.

The Missing Children On Demand videos will air on the following Time Warner Cable digital channels throughout the state of Texas:

I don't want to sound pessimistic but I have some concerns about this channel. The channel numbers are so high up (with the slight exception of Waco) that the chance of someone just skimming through all the channels up to the 800's is very rare, especially when you consider that all the popular channels have low numbers. Therefore, everyone who is watching this On Demand channel is choosing to watch it. The only thing on the channel will be missing children, and I don't know how many people would honestly watch a channel, where I'm presuming, is just going to show the child's picture, name, stats, and where they were seen last. Shows like Unsolved Mysteries and AMW had to create reenactments of the cases to make them more interesting for viewers. I am just worried that this will become the 21st century's version of milk cartons and those "Have you seen me?" cards that come in the mail. I honestly think it would be much more beneficial to have popular shows mention a missing child before every commercial break or at the end of the show. American Idol gets over 20 million viewers, other shows get over 10 million viewers, and that would expose the missing child to a lot more people than how many would be watching this channel at any given time.
