ORLANDO, Fla. – A researcher considered a key prosecution witness started off the third week of testimony in the trial of a Florida woman accused of killing her toddler daughter.

Arpad Vass, who has come up with a new technique for detecting decayed bodies, said Monday that he smelled an "overwhelmingly strong" odor of human decomposition in an air sample taken from the car of 25-year-old Casey Anthony.

Casey Anthony defense attacks link of car smell

ORLANDO, Fla (Reuters) - A lawyer for accused child killer Casey Anthony on Monday attacked the new science of identifying human decomposition by a body's chemical vapors.

"This is the first time you've ever given this testimony in a court of law?" defense attorney Jose Baez asked Arpad Vass, a research scientist from the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

Vass said yes, but maintained that chemical compounds in air and fiber samples taken from Casey's car trunk were consistent with decaying human remains

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Day 23 of Casey Anthony's murder trial, one day after groundbreaking evidence was introduced into the trial continues at 9AM.
Sheaffer said cross-examination of Vass failed to discredit the doctor’s expert credentials.

“Baez could not shake it, and at the end of the day, I think the jury found him credible and that there was a dead body in the trunk of that car,” he said.

Prosecutors say Casey Googled how to make chloroform 3 months before the murder. Baez tried to get Vass to say the stain in Casey's trunk could have been caused by rotting meat, which wasn't even found in the bag of trash in the trunk.

“If you were eating a piece of hamburger it'd have to be raw and with a bag over your head. We're talking several pounds of meat,” said Vass.

FBI Analyst, Lab Researcher Called To Testify

Michael Rickenbach, an FBI forensic chemist examiner, testified that he analyzed pieces of Anthony's trunk liner and parts of the spare tire cover, among other items.

He said, chloroform "residue" was found, but it was at low levels -- which seemed to contradict testimony offered by a scientist Tuesday that levels of chloroform in the trunk were "shockingly high."



Jurors hear more scientific testimony, focusing on analysis of the trunk of her car and on cadaver dogs.

A garbage bag found in Casey Antony's car is the focus of testimony on day 23 of her murder trial.

Deputy Jason Forgey was asked to explain how his dog, Gerus, was trained and what the dog detected in the case.

Casey's defense attorney, Jose Baez, suggested Tuesday that Bloise altered crucial evidence.


Baez questioned Bloise about why he dried out garbage found in a bag in Casey's car. It included empty packages of pizza, lunch meat, frozen chicken and cheese, among other things.

Dr.Vass told jurors he was shocked to find 10,000 times the amount potentially deadly chloroform than would normally be expected in human decomposition alone.

Rickenbach, however, did not want to offer specific levels, saying it would not be appropriate because he conducted qualitative testing, confirming chloroform's presence, rather than quantitative testing, which would detect its level.

Jason Forgery, took the stand after Rickenbach.


Earlier Tuesday, crime scene technician Gerardo Bloise testified about a bag of trash that sat in Anthony's trunk for weeks during the heat of a Florida summer
