John Schulz - undergrad degree bio anthropolgy...masters human anthro...PhD in anthropology....(kc wiping tears?)

Forensic anthropoligist study human skeleton....as forensic archeologist - specialist collecting remains in field, locating recovering human remains....
taphonomy - study body after death.....how skeleton dispersed @ a site....

forensic anthropology PhD labs - U of FL - provide service to FL for skeletonized remains sent there - continuous flow of skeletonized cases - great place to work as a graduate student....studied Anthony Falcetti and Dr. Michael Warren - detect human remains and ground penetrating radar dectector - remote sensing tools ie: GPR

UCF - metropolitin University works with community - medical examiners and Sheriff dept on as needed basis...prior to you working here ....Dr. DuPrey bio-archeologist forensic cases and some cases sent to Gainesville....she was @ University but not working with the scope of cases he does.....served as a local resource for them.....if needed they could call..

12/11/08 - received calls from Hansen & Dr. G - go to scene initial recovery.....not present during the first day - not @ scene - he had a final on osteology (skeleton) - initial remains had been recovered - went to ME's office ....arrived there skull there? don't remember....first recollection of seeing skull - looking in bag ...saw skull and duct tape ---tore corners of bag to lay it flat so skull not handled in anyway.....present when pictures were taken.....xrays ....photo he held skull up to picture skull.....pic where he is holding the skull - his gloved hand holding skull (kc breathing heavy wiping with same kleenex)

mandible still in anotomical position - normal position position of bones during life.....mandible was close in anatomical position.....surprise to see...mandible comes away once soft tissue is gone....hair moved to base of skull...leaf litter and roots....tape have any involvement in holding - tape was adheared to the hair.....

no evidence of trauma to bones - plan to excavate site? he would not call in an excavation - they were using trowels .....call this a recovery not excavation....material was leaf litter to remove....on 12th he arrived @ scene - talked to susan mears - csi, dealing with a small child - very small bones - additional parts of bones - some bones not completely ossified yet ....heavy wood environment - process scene every one on hands and knees remove leaf litter - screen and double check with a sifting station.....start from known area and work out from there - I worked from where skull found with susan mears because I would be identifying bones......screening box...mesh bottom box all material - sift thru material......sheriff had 2nd sifter....everything sifted thru was sifted again......2nd smaller mesh due to bones so small.....

photos of process of recovery - OcsO took photos - I only there as advisory - not there whole time.....photos SA exhibit EP - set up main area with blue canopy tarp over main area.....where skull initially found.....on hands and knees small bones - laying flags out....mapping document spatial relationships where items are found in the field....items and skeletal remains....using a computerized transit is most accurate....used by Ocso....Ron Murdock - used station and discussed how done....remains were found he was there - schultz was there every day in town and available - assess bones and material -human bones to expand search.....what material was human bones....small bones....increased area ....additional CSI = additional human remains found expanding area as additional bones were located.....

Pic EP - publish - canopy picture...lots vines in area...show process....remove some vines, plant debris....when items located place flags with number...small bones - flag placed where bone was found .....important to know where particular bones found and what order - when trying to determine how bones were disarticuated....separated from natural ....recognize photo?

pictures all the flags representing items....showing that process EQ- pic publish

close up of the earlier pic we looked @ different angle - CSI in charge of documentation...flags representing locations of items found....in left hand has a evidence folder for collection - she is collecting....wrote down number for that piece of evidence - written on flag as she is removing evidence - mapping each bone and evidence the sheriff collected....continually mapping....

his job was to tell what was bone, human bone and not....non-human stuff - looked @ those bones @ ME office if they were transported.......

Pic - ER publish....what looking @ in the photo? number of vertabrae....no soft tissue....roots growing throughout....dealing with a child....how we grow - bones don't grow as whole units = grow in pieces to allow growth.....vertebrae on his right ....back of the vertebrae - here is where they separated......all these were found in one location....all transported while they were still together.....while soft tisse still present....significant as to how they got transported....

onto SA #EW - photo photo of a bone fragment (kc blows nose first time).....received publish....bone with manilla envelope with writing....document(kc whispers to dS - DS doesn't respond) deeper with roots how it was found? this one may have been found in sift - person recovered remains....lane 5, sift bone....fragment from another bone....

SA exhibit FA - photo of 2 bones found ....publish...what are these bones? the largest bones in body shafts in the femora - where lower leg bones attach to the pelvis...

split screen with this and last photo EW - two bones relate to each other? tope of bones been chewed on by animals ( kc appears to actually cry - breathing facial expressions shaking appear consistent for the first time it is crying for Caylee IMO!)

Dr. Schultz w/ JA - identify photo - small piece of bone belongs to this bone in other picture.

photo - small finger and hand bones.....scientific scales in center screen ...placed a quarter in picture to show how tiny they actually are.....recovery effort took how long? refer to notes....initial 12/11/08 - up until 12/20/08 mapping finished...

EZ - photo 2 bones recovered ....publish...bones represent part of the pelvis...touch your waist find top of your pelvis...top part of the juxcoxa (sic?) adipocere as well...fats convert in body to wax (grave wax).....one of these was found almost completely buried in the muck...which one? check notes....left one - shown in the picture.....

FC - photo - picture of skeleton laid out in anatomical order after all the bones were recovered....publish....how successful was recovery effort? generally recovering skeleton dispursed @ site and carnivore activity - very difficult to collect all of skeleton remains and the teeth....got all but one tooth, most of the spine, ribs, long bones, tiny bones, only one bone on right foot - due to animal activity.....provided info from Ron Murdock with mapping locations....normally utilize taphony and forensic to come to expert opinion....want to have things mapped out from the dump site...

survey containing notes where dispersal of the various bones....QG - publish........zoom in on the area....mappping on screen....bones in area where bones were found....what found in each area.....area A what we feel primary depositional area...body and mass of bags placed into woods.....initial separatation occurred....skull, arms, limbs....as skeleton dispursed @ scene -can follow along which parts were where.....as he was advising OCSO - in picture north in picture....investigators were south....as additional bones found...each day we find more material....search progressed further south.....expand west and east.....location of more bones further out.....go from the known and expand further out....completely searched...all surface debris and ground will be scraped.... (kc blowing nose with a tissue) what found in area A? HHBP says cannot talk @ same time....

what skeletal remains in area A? - skull, bags, additional bones, arms with hand bones, lower legs found there with left foot.....Area B - shaft upper arm humerus....progressed further to Southeast area F - trunk of body w/pelvis both lower leg bones and pelvis....connected anatomical unit - being dragged away from area A - trunk with femoral attached to pelvis still articulated....area D - only located 1 bone - far left of diagram.....only bone found for right foot - carnivore damage - area E - is handbone (just one).....area G - most of spinal column with many ribs attached - along with lower spinal column - consistent with animal....there was damage to spinal column - animal damage ....area H - ribs and little bones disarticulated.....area I - found 20 of 24 vertebrae....trunk being dragged thru woods, not held on by ligaments.....spinal column being dragged while articulated......a whole anatomical unit being dragged...

in order for that to occur - had to be tissue connecting bones together as a unit....

based upon dispersal pattern.....body deposited in area A as a complete unit....relatively intact......area F clearly trunk and lower legs were clearly articulated.....no indication body was dismembered by using a tool - natural process of decomp....

one bone was buried in something - taphonomy...how bones dispurse (object- sidebar)

Schultz w/JA

the illium ....water area ...whole area flooded - silt and other suspensions in the water would have buried this bone....close to a big palmetto trunk....area F is lowest area...when whole trunk brought in there by carnivore....silt in suspension in water...process of water receeding would have buried this bone.....opinion as to taphonomy ...determine TOD we document all locations of bones ...disperal...bones were dry...not just tissue but have marrow in them.....they can still have decomp odor and moist to touch but these were dry.....leaf litter, root evidence, put in report 6 months could be possible.....dispersal of bones was primarily result of animal activity - when we find it directly on the bones there was some animal chewing on a couple of the ribs.....there are a couple of missing bones - taken away by animals - chewed and nothing left of the bone after that....

CM cross Schultz
Forensic anthropoligst - help direct location of bones and examine them youself....bones were xrayed - no evidence of any pre-mortem trauma - no evidence of peri-mortem trauma - anti-mortem trauma?

found no evidence of fractures.....twists or torqueing of bones....no evidence this child had ever had traumatic injury before her death paper copy of the map - print is too small for CM to read ....area A was how far from pavement of the road ...use scale on the mapping ...without having a ruler on me - 25' - 30' didn't participate in measurements....this map shows elevations...a 3D scanner was brought in....measurements were provided by Ronald Murdock....they both looked thru map of each of locations of flags and map was created...can't tell measurements? give me a ruler and I could....Fresh OUt ...

Cm - start w/area A primary site - skull, bags, arm, hand bone, lower leg bone located...originally they were in bags when deposited...plastic bags laundry bag and skull with bones in it...no bags in other other areas? no bags but parts of bags...not my job....all area A had majority skull, and other bones, were all in the bags....majority of A found .....in examine content of area a you discovered missing bones? don't agree with that ....other people processing the scene - people locating addtional bones in other areas....area A was primary area....go east ...whole crew there searching simulataneously.....did best to reassemble skeleton....don't have any scientific evidence when disperse from A...can't provide specific time period on any areas....nothing in work or this case....tells you how this child died...not a question he would answer - looked for peri-mortem trauma and didn't find it....didn't analyze duct tape....not covering nasal aperature? No....

redirect..
what is nasal aperature? hole on skull where nose would be...remove the nose the nasal apperature ....tape was covering mouth area...possibly could have covered the nose...based on what he saw...no way to say exactly because nose wasn't tehre.....kc talking to DS behind hand...DS not responding..

248 in evidence - publish...CM asked you question majority of bones found.in area A...refer to report ....not an exact - general - skull area, some of the bones were here general sense.....

area B - left humerus....closest to area A

area F - larger area on diagram....appears larger - dispersal out a little further, clavicles, pelvis, femor, femora, shaft, ribs, one vertebrae

area G - separation of bottom distal end of spinal column and couple ribs

area H - only had 1 part of vertebrae - bunch of ribs

area I - more ribs - have 20 vertebrae parts

no further questions...

recross to those issues? no

Dr. is excused
