Results of DNA testing conducted by the FBI laboratory and Minnesota Department of Public Safety have concluded the human remains found in the East Galesburg brickyards in 1996 were not those of Lula Cora Hood as initially believed.

------------

I don't know if this is the right place to put this - tried searching for a thread on Lula Hood but didn't find one; tried searching for brickyard, etc. If this belongs someplace else, please let me know. For now, we have not only an unidentified victim, but also Lula Cora Hood is technically missing again.

Police release photos from human remains investigation: Police said the human remains were found in light Sears brand pants, a blue zippered sweatshirt, a white blouse with black and red pinstripes, ankle pom pom socks, and size 8 brown/tan “KangaROO” snow joggers boots.

Police said the KangaROO boots were made between 1982 and 1984.
Do they think she died between 1982 and 1984?

Do they think she died between 1982 and 1984?

They didn't say. But it is safe to presume that she died no earlier than 1982.

It kinda makes you wonder how it was that they settled on a woman who went missing in 1970. Sure, she could have wandered about for 12 years without contacting family, or she could have been held prisoner, but it sure makes them look pretty bad nevertheless.

I'm sorry.I'm completely confused. Were these remains found in MN or IL?Also what was lulu Cora Hoods description? What was the Jane Does age when she was found?

Lulu Cora Hood was 44 years old at the time of her disappearance (DOB October 30, 1926).

The UID was described as "a short (approximately 4'7" in height), heavy-set white female between 59 and 71- years-old. Samples of light reddish brown hair." were found.

Here's a facial reconstruction.

Human remains found in brickyards in 1996 misidentified

The remains found had been identified as Lula Cora Hood Phillips but DNA testing by the FBI laboratory proved the remains were not Ms. Phillips.

The UID female was reportedly found wearing: pants, a sweatshirt, a blouse, socks and brown/tan, size 8 KangaROO brand boots. (and possibly a garbage bag? A link below discusses that).

(NOTE: article is much older but has no date I can find, this is the article to announce an identification but has since proved to be a misidentification).

Upon further study, investigators discovered that the plastic garbage bag was actually being worn by Cora as rain gear or a windbreaker over her other clothing

the remains were from a short (approximately 4'7" in height), heavy-set white female between 59 and 71- years-old. Samples of light reddish brown hair were also discovered with the body and no signs of obvious trauma or foul play were observed.

There was also evidence of "advanced osteophytosis" in the victim's vertebrae and joints.

(directly above is a link that has pictures of clothing and shoes found with unidentified deceased).

The second article (undated older article) has pictures of skeletal remains and of a previous reconstruction. Another reconstruction is reportedly going to be done.

This is very interesting, fascinating actually. I'm not a firm believer in coincidence, but this case does give me pause. Thanks for posting it.

Authorities Believe They Have Located Lula Cora Hood Alive
Investigators with the Knox County Sheriff's Department say they are confident that a woman who was believed to have been missing since 1970 is alive.

Details about her identity and location, however, are being withheld out of consideration for the privacy of Lula Cora Hood's family, the Sheriff's Department said.

Recent information from the family led police to a person living out of state. She and the missing Hood shared the same first and middle name and birth date. The law enforcement agency in that area was asked to contact the woman.

On Wednesday, Knox County investigators interviewed the woman, who verified details of her life and family. Investigators are confident she is 85-year-old Lula Cora Hood/Phillips/Smith, who has been missing since 1970.

So our UID remains unidentified and Lula has been located. Facinating!

Any ideas about the "Laurie Mae" blouse and sweatshirt? I haven't been able to find any info about that clothing line.

http://wqad.com/2013/05/01/photos-and-new-info-released-as-skeletal-remains-case-is-still-unsolved/

Investigators hope updated information and artist’s renderings might help identify a woman whose skeletal remains were found in the East Galesburg Brickyards in 1996.

New artist’s renderings were released May 1, 2013 showing an approximation of the woman’s face. Police stress the images are not a portrait of the deceased person, but an estimate of her facial characteristics based on measurements of the remains.

Police think the remains are those of a Caucasian woman who was between 4-feet 11-inches and 5-feet 5-inches tall. She had light reddish-brown hair, weighed 130 to 160 pounds, and they estimated her age to be between 55 and 85 years old at the time of her death. Her death was believed to have happened between 1984 and 1996.

Clothing found in the area of the remains included tan, size 8 KangaROOS brand snow jogger boots, light-colored Sears brand polyester pants, a white with black and red pinstripes Laurie Mae blouse with lace and ruffles on the front, a blue zip-up hooded sweatshirt, white bra and underwear, white and yellow pompom socks and a brown plastic trash bag worn as a protective smock. Investigators found nine other folded trash bags, a small clear plastic bag and a brown leather zipper pouch as well.

The woman had a pronounced overbite and had numerous teeth extracted prior to her death.

Investigators are especially interested in hearing from anyone with a female friend or family member who was missing between 1980 and 1986.

They would also like to speak with anyone who worked at the Galesburg State Research Hospital and Galesburg Mental Health Center, and anyone who might have provided dental care to residents of that facility, between 1980 and the time it closed.

Police said it would also be helpful to hear from anyone who provided food, clothing or shelter to homeless or disadvantaged people between the mid 1980s and mid 1990s.

http://www.whbf.com/story/23396346/galesburg-jane-doe-identifiedBiological daughter of a missing person, Helen Ruth Alps, provided the DNA standard for the department for comparison with the Jane Doe remains," said Sgt. Landers.

Two out of state labs helped piece together the DNA samples, and made it crystal clear.

"Jane Doe is Helen Ruth Alps," said Sgt. Landers.

It's believed Alps disappeared and died sometime between the spring of 1988 and November 1991.

This Jane Doe was identified as Helen Alps..
