MONTREAL — Police in Laval, Que., say they have arrested a man in connection with the 1995 killing of nine-year-old Joleil Campeau.

The little girl's remains were discovered in a creek about 180 metres from her family's Auteil-neighbourhood home on June 16, 1995, several days after her disappearance.

At the time, police said she had not been sexually assaulted before being killed. Police said they believed she had been accosted while on her way to a friend's house.

Police now say they have arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the crime.

It is very good news every time an old cold case gets movement, especially an arrest

A 37-year-old Montreal man, Eric Daudelin, was charged Thursday with first-degree murder, sexual assault, and unlawful confinement in the death of a young girl 16 years ago in Laval, Que.

Joleil Campeau, 9, was last seen alive on her way to a friend's house one street away from her home in Laval's Auteuil district on June 12, 1995. She was found dead in a swampy wooded area near her home four days after her mother reported her missing when she didn't arrive at her friend's house.

The Montreal resident was arrested Wednesday night and is expected to be arraigned in a Laval courtroom on Thursday on several unspecified charges, police said in a statement.

In April 2005, Laval police announced they had reopened the investigation, and two other cold cases, based on leads provided by new technology.

The other two killings reopened in 2005, that of Marie-Eve Larivière, 12, who was sexually assaulted and strangled in 1992, and Annie Brissette, 29, who was beaten to death in 1995, remain unsolved. Police have ruled out the suspect arrested for the death of Campeau because he was behind bars at the time of the other two deaths.

Yes, it is sad. So glad that even though the wheels of justice moved slowly, they at least caught a suspect.

However, I wonder... During all of those years that he was free due to lack of evidence, how many other crimes did he commit? He was caught for several, but how many other victims are there out there?

Thank goodness for DNA testing!! :woohoo: Catching the bad guys one at a time!

Wow, I love to hear these kinds of news reports. Better late then never huh?

Did justice system fail Joleil Campeau?
Warning about accused; 'Sexual sadist who posed a high risk of reoffending'
By PAUL CHERRY, The Gazette June 29, 2011

. Laval police said a new development in DNA evidence helped the investigation.

A written summary of the parole board's 1994 decision to maintain Daudelin's incarceration - a measure used only on five per cent of federal inmates - details how Daudelin admitted during his hearing about having "constant fantasies" that were getting worse.

He said some of his fantasies involved murder and disembowelling women.

The parole board was given a report based on a July 1994 evaluation by psychiatrist Antoine Durivage in which he described Daudelin as "a very high risk of reoffending violently and probably murdering at this stage, which he doesn't hope for."

MONTREAL - As a teenager, Eric Daudelin asked for help to control his violent fantasies. Gradually, his fantasies won. Eventually, police became convinced he would kill and he was placed under constant surveillance, an examination of his court records show.

The 37-year-old Daudelin remains behind bars after his arrest a month ago in the death of Joleil Campeau, a 9-year-old Laval girl who was sexually assaulted and killed in 1995.

Well before Joleil's death, Daudelin's increasingly disturbing behaviour alarmed police, prosecutors and psychiatrists, who used every legal mean at their disposal to protect the public.

But changes allowing authorities to place tighter controls on dangerous offenders like Daudelin didn't go into effect until 1997

Jury selection begins in Éric Daudelin’s trial over 9-year-old Joleil Campeau’s killing

MONTREAL — Jury selection began Monday morning at the Laval courthouse in the trial of Éric Daudelin, charged with sexually assaulting and killing a 9-year-old girl nearly two decades ago.

Daudelin was arrested in 2011 in the slaying of Joleil Campeau, who went missing in June 1995 after leaving home to visit a friend.

Before jury selection began, a clerk read out the three charges Daudelin faces; first-degree murder, sexual assault and forcible confinement. He entered a not-guilty plea to each charge.
