A woman who was found dead in a Northeast Travis County fire has been identified as 24-year-old Elizabeth Escobar, a Travis County sheriff’s official said.

Travis County sheriff’s officials are now identifying the case as a homicide investigation, said sheriff’s spokesman Roger Wade.

Eva Escobar said her daughter left the apartment at some point and never returned Wednesday night. A neighbor called police after finding Estrada-Escobar's children alone and crying. She loved her children and would not have willingly left them, her mother and her friends said.

The article notes she was in an unhappy relationship, but doesn't say with whom. As far as I can tell, the police have announced no POI.

MANOR, Texas (KXAN) - While there is still no arrest in the death of a woman found while firefighters battled a grass fire along a rural road, investigators said they have a new lead in the case.

Detectives are on the lookout for a smaller, four-door, silver sedan. Last seen with the 24-year-old victim on Wednesday, they said it has a Louisiana license plate and is possibly a Mazda Protege.

The Travis County Sheriff's Department said they have swabbed one man's mouth for DNA, in the homicide case of Elizabeth Escobar.

On a personal note: I find this disheartening. East Austin gets a bad rap around here, and Manor is a rural area. If this same murder had happened to a young woman from North Austin (tech, finance, nouveau riche) , no matter her race, there'd be more written about it and more exposure for the case. As it is, I have to run a full Google search every time I want an update.

But ultimately, the decision is in the hands of Travis County District Attorney, Rosemarry Lehmberg.

“We have no desire to relive her death,” said Scarborough.

He believes money spent on a trial could be better spent elsewhere.

“We want Willie Griffin to go away forever, but we don’t want to be defined by him, and we don’t see the need to go through all the expenses of a trial,” said Scarborough. “Why try a guy that’s already got six life terms and is never going to see the light of day?”

Travis County court documents show Griffin is due back in court February 19.
