Viola Drath, slain Georgetown woman, had sought protection against husband, documents show
Viola Drath, a popular 91-year-old Georgetown socialite who was found slain in her home Friday, had a tumultuous and sometimes violent relationship with her much younger husband, court documents show.

Drath obtained several protective orders against Albrecht Gero Muth during their 21-year marriage, according to D.C. Superior Court records. Drath was 86 at the time; Muth, 42.
---
In May 2006, Drath brought domestic violence charges against Muth, alleging that he had been drinking and became incensed at a comment during an argument in their library, picked up a chair and hit her over the head with it.
---
Wait. It gets odder.
Muth, a German native who uses the name Sheikh Ali Al-Muthaba, received an undergraduate degree from American University in 1991. He claims to be a brigadier general in the Iraqi Army with connections to groups in Iraq
---
Several people said that Muth often said he was a Washington and Iraqi insider but that they were unsure of his pedigree and access.
---
Neighbors said Muth dressed strangely, sometimes strolling around the neighborhood in a military uniform consisting of khaki pants and a red jacket and carrying what appeared to be a marching baton and a cigar

The rest - the gay lover, for example - at Washington Post link above. A very sad story of a very interesting woman's demise.

Tabloid? Of course it's in a tabloid too:

91-year-old socialite killed in her Georgetown townhouse had sought
protection from husband 44 years her junior 'who had gay lover'
(Daily Mail)

WUSA just posted on Facebook that he has been taken into custody.

DC trial opens in case of slain journalist

WASHINGTON (AP) - A German man who masqueraded as a well-connected Army general choked his elderly wife to death, searched online for escape plans and claimed to be entitled to part of the socialite's estate, a prosecutor said at the man's murder trial Tuesday.

But Albrecht Muth's lawyer said during opening statements that his client is innocent and that prosecutors have no evidence linking him to the death of the 91-year-old victim.

Charged with first-degree murder, Muth could face life in prison if convicted.

"Albrecht Muth didn't kill his wife. The government has their theory but that's all it is - a theory," public defender Craig Hickein said. "And they can't prove that he did it because he didn't."........

Muth, though absent from the trial, is able to follow the proceedings though an electronic hookup in court. He has been fasting intermittently - he says he's following the orders of the archangel Gabriel -and doctors say he is too frail to be brought to court. A judge ruled that Muth, who has resisted multiple urgings to resume eating and regain health, was intentionally making himself unavailable and that the trial could proceed without him.

A German con man who masqueraded as a European count and an Iraqi general was sentenced to 50 years in prison Wednesday for beating his 91-year-old wife to death in their posh Washington row house.

Albrecht Muth, 49, was convicted of murder in January for beating and strangling his socialite wife, Viola Drath, and trying to fool cops into thinking she fell inside their tony Georgetown pad.
