A group of students discovered the body while walking on the main path in Gatineau Park, exploring the area on their second day in school.

One, who declined to give her name, said they noticed something strange when they saw traces of smoke coming from a trail that connects the path to the school. The body wasn't visible from the main path, she said, but they came across it only about five seconds down the trail.

"It didn't seem real," she said. "It looked like a mannequin. We would never have thought it was someone. That's why there was a delay in calling the police."

Lemay said that when police arrived on scene, they found smoke coming from the location of the body.

"We're dealing with a body that has marks of violence and also burn marks on the body," he said.

OTTAWA — Gatineau police say they have four suspects in a parallel investigation to the slaying of an 18-year-old Gatineau college student.

The second investigation involves a possible indignity to the dead body of Valérie Leblanc and obstruction of a police investigation. Leblanc was found dead Tuesday afternoon in a wooded area behind the CEGEP de l’Outaouais’s Gabrielle-Roy campus. Police have not released the names of the suspects but say they were questioned Tuesday night and Wednesday and released without being charged.

“We have four suspects concerning this parallel investigation. These suspects are absolutely not responsible for the death of Valérie Leblanc,” Sgt. Jean-Paul Lemay told the Citizen.

Police do not have a suspect in the murder, but they said Thursday they believe only one person is responsible.

The location where the body was found is near the spot where in March 2010 a woman was found badly burned in what police later called an attempted suicide.

The similarity of the incidents led some at the school and family members of Leblanc to speculate they were connected.

But on Wednesday police said last year's incident is still considered an attempted suicide, while Leblanc's death is being treated as a homicide.

how sad & strange...

Lemay said Leblanc was a student at the college in Gatineau, but little else about her indicates why she was killed.

"Valerie Leblanc is someone without any history with the Gatineau police," Lemay said.

"We know that she'd broken up with boyfriend, also a student, and he too isn't known to police."

Police met with the minor and say he's not implicated in the case.

An autopsy will be performed in Montreal to determine the cause of death.

Thank you dotr for creating this thread, and congrats for it being your very first one! Thanks Matou for your help as well :)

This from the link dotr posted on SV's thread. This article was written BEFORE LE started the parallel investigation. I find it unbelievable that one of the four students is a girl! (or I might be reading it wrong, IDK) ... and now we know the real reason for the delay in calling the police :maddening:
Her body, which Gatineau police said had been badly beaten and burned, was found by a group of students at around 4 p.m. in the woods behind the campus at 333 Cité des Jeunes Blvd.

The students were on the main path in Gatineau Park, exploring the area on their second day in CEGEP. One said they noticed traces of smoke coming from a trail that connects the path to the CEGEP.

The body wasn’t visible from the main path, she said, but they came across it only about five seconds down the trail.

“It didn’t seem real,” she said in French. “It looked like a mannequin. We would never have thought it was someone. That’s why there was a delay in calling the police.”

From the Toronto SUn in cache because the article has since changed to withold names I guess:

The smell of smoke alerted a group of four teens to the horrific scene as they walked along a trail smoking cigarettes Tuesday afternoon.

At first they thought it was from an overnight bonfire, but instead they found Valerie, lying face-down in the dirt, her clothes charred, her corpse still aflame.

"At first we didn't think it was real, thought it was a simulation from the school but it was a girl and there was still fire on her. She was in real bad shape," DA, 18, an Algonquin College student, told QMI Agency.

"Her clothes were melted on her" and her pants were "off a little," he added

JT, 17, said the young woman was covered in blood, her legs twisted and wrists badly bruised. She described the smell as burning plastic.

This may disappear fast so....

:( I feel so sad, specially for her Grandma.
OTTAWA - The first hint Valerie Leblanc's family had that something awful had happened was when the teen's backpack was found Tuesday near the trail where her burned and battered body was later discovered.

The bag, found by a cleaner in a Gatineau, Que., field behind de l'Outaouais college, contained contact info for Leblanc's family.

When Huguette Leblanc - Valerie's grandmother - met the man to collect the bag, she realized the only thing Leblanc had on her was her cellphone, so she went down to the trail.

That's when she saw police had the area cordoned off.

She described Valerie to the cops.

"But they didn't talk - they had to protect the investigation," she said.

Huguette didn't know her granddaughter's body was lying just a few feet away, but "she had a feeling," she said.

RIP Valerie.

This case reminds me on poor Kimberley Proctor who fell victim to 2 under-18 psychopaths. JMO I hope LE closes this case quickly and apprehends the cruel person who did this act on her. There's no way I see this as a suicide.

The suicide attempt last year is unrelated to this case (according to the officer interviewed). It happened around the same area. I remember we discussed that case at the time, in Lachlan's thread.

I have just been catching up on the Kimberley P thread and I can see why it would remind you of this case, the callousness is horrifying - could it be people caught up in some kind of game?I wonder what Missizzy would think ?

Rest in Peace, Valerie.
:rose: :rose: :rose:

So sad and horrific.

Police don't sound too concerned about any risk to other students, in spite of the previous body found in almost the same spot.

They say that the ex-boyfriend is not a suspect. It definitely seems that LE believes it is someone she knows though, otherwise I just can't imagine them not alerting the public to remain cautious.

When pressed, police would not rule out that the killing could have been the work of a predatory individual, though they said it was too early in the investigation to draw any conclusions. Gatineau police Sgt. Jean Paul Lemay did confirm that police have ruled out several people as suspects — including Leblanc's ex-boyfriend, family and friends.

"Anything is open right now," Lemay said. "These usual suspects are dealt with rapidly, but we can't just concentrate on these usual suspects, we must be open-minded and be open to every possibility."

Every time I read a story like this, I am appalled at the things humans do to eachother. RIP sweet girl and may justice be served in this case quickly!

Four teenagers told police they were walking through the park on Tuesday afternoon when they saw smoke rising from an off-trail area. They went to investigate, and discovered Leblanc’s body with evidence of burns and other signs of violence.

The teens later told police that they did not realize the body was real, so they returned to class. Eventually they decided something was wrong and phoned police.

WTH??? This seems different from what was initially reported.

And....
On Thursday, police launched a parallel investigation to the homicide probe, saying they believe Leblanc’s body was tampered with after her death. They are investigating charges of obstructing justice and causing an indignity to a body
.

Wow, this is going to be a problem to the investigation. What did these kids do? Throw garbage on top of her? (It smelled like burning plastic) Pulled her clothes down? JMO

C D, a student at the CEGEP, told police Friday she saw a man leaving the woods while was sitting in her car on Tuesday around 12:30. It was a young, white man, about the age of a student, she said. His hair was pushed back over his face. She she said she didn’t think he saw her.
