NC - Jiya, 8, & Piya Patel, 4, dead in hatchet attack, mom charged, 27 Aug 2011

Naiyana Patel, 33, struck herself in the head repeatedly with the same hatchet in a failed suicide attempt and was recovering from surgery at Mission Hospital, according to a Police Department spokesman. Police were standing guard at her door.
The attack, at 40 Shannon Drive in East Asheville, was reported by the father, Lalji Patel, in a call to 911 around 10 a.m., Lt. Wally Welch said. The couple’s two daughters, Jiya, 8 and Piya, 4, were found dead inside.
Welch said the family had only lived in the modest house for a month or two. The parents are from India, and the children were born in the United States, he said.

[Neighbour] Patel said Naiyana was being treated for depression after a pregnancy she did not carry to full-term, and, at some point she switched medication because the initial prescription did not seem to help.

Lt. Welch said investigators took medication from the home that relatives say was prescribed to Naiyana after the pregnancy ended.

"Certainly, we've had speculation that there is either an elective abortion or a miscarriage -- we're not quite sure which." Lt. Welch said, "There are larger definitions of what you consider right and wrong in her mental state and her capacity at the time of the incident.

The search warrant said that when Naiyana Patel was interviewed by investigators said claimed that "the ghost killed her children," and that she did not want to live and did not want surgery...

Naiyana Patel was in the hospital Tuesday afternoon, recovering from her injuries. Police said she will likely be charged with two counts of first-degree murder upon her release.

Friends of the family said Naiyana Patel recently had a child that wasn't carried to term and had been suffering from postpartum depression.

Naiyana Patel was on the docket for 9:30 a.m. to appear before a judge in a preliminary hearing, but she did not show because her attorney said she was not fit to appear. The hearing was rescheduled for Jan. 10, 2012.

Patel was charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of her two daughters...

Police said Patel had recent mental health issues and had been recently seeing a psychiatrist.

The North Carolina mother accused of killing her children with a hatchet was supposed to have a court appearance Tuesday for the second time.

Naiyana Patel was on the docket to appear before a judge in a preliminary hearing, but she did not show because her attorney said she was still incapable of proceeding. The hearing was rescheduled for March 9. It previously had been postponed to Jan. 10 on Nov. 14.

The only record I can find after that is that she was arrested in 2014. I don't know what for. I can't find if she ever even issued a plea for the murder charges. If anyone else can find more information I would be most grateful.
