ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Police have a suspect in the disappearance and death of Aleszandra "Alie" Berrelez, a cold case that has spanned 18 years.

The 5-year-old girl disappeared on May 18, 1993, from the Golden Nugget apartment complex on Grand Avenue in Englewood. Her body was found four days later in Deer Creek Canyon in Jefferson County.

Her body was in a duffel bag that had been tossed down a ravine. She was still dressed in the denim jumper she was wearing when she disappeared. She had been smothered to death.

Investigators taking a new look at the unsolved 1993 kidnapping and murder of 5-year-old Alie Berrelez matched a DNA sample to a long dead suspect in the case — ending a saga for the little girl's family.

Nicholas Randolph Stofer was a focus of the investigation as far back as February 1994, but prosecutors never felt enough evidence existed to file charges and his DNA had not previously been matched to evidence in the case. Stofer died of a drug overdose in 2001.

Better late than never!

This case has just been announced as solved. (I don't know if this is the correct forum to post this. If not please tell me or move it to the right place.)

Colo. police: Suspect in 1993 girl's death is dead (Posted Sep 13, 2011)

Police in a Denver suburb announced Tuesday that DNA results showed that a man long suspected in the 1993 abduction and death of a 5-year-old girl had been responsible, but they were ending the investigation because he was dead.

Englewood Police Chief John Collins said investigators identified Nicholas Stofer as the lone suspect in Alie Barrelez's death through DNA testing, which wasn't available in Colorado at the time of her disappearance. Stofer died of natural causes in Phoenix on Oct. 7, 2001.

Nick Stofer died in 2001.

They collected his DNA in the early 90s and are JUST NOW getting around to testing it??? He was obviously on their radar since the murder happened.

Anyone else think they waited a bit long??????!!!!! Anyway, glad her case was solved but not so happy with the length of time it took.

I wish they would have tested the DNA sooner so the family could have some sort of closure and know that the killer of their daughter wasn't still out there lurking around. Wonder what took them so long to do the dna testing.

Bloodhounds and other dogs are amazing creatures. They are human helpers, a blind persons eyes and find missing people, as well as providing protection, love and companionship!!

How wonderful that the memory of this precious child is associated with an organization the provides bloodhounds to help track missing children!!!
