Triple murder trial set in Brunswick

The case had been moved from Jesup, where the killings occurred.

James Ralph "J.R." Spell, 40, faces the death penalty or life in prison if found guilty of murdering Amanda Harrison Spell, 24, or her parents, Jeaney Mason Harrison, 49, and Gary Aldine Harrison, 54, in 2007.
On Tuesday, Superior Court Judge Stephen Scarlett ordered jury selection to begin Jan. 9 at the Glynn County Courthouse.

Amanda Spell, 24, and Gary Harrison, 54, were discovered shot to death shortly after 5 a.m. inside the Harrison mobile home on Rodney Jones Road about six miles north of Jesup, Wayne County Sheriff John Carter told The Times-Union.

Jeaney Harrison, 49, who is Gary Harrison's wife and Amanda Spell's mother, apparently staggered or crawled to the home of a next-door neighbor in search of help, Carter said.

Amanda's Spells's ex-husband, James Ralph Spell, 37, of Jesup, was arrested about 12:30 p.m. after an intensive three-county manhunt, Carter said. James Spell is charged with shooting all three victims, Carter said.

A Glynn County jury imposed two life sentences without parole on James Ralph “J.R.” Spell, whom they convicted Saturday night of murdering his ex-wife and her mother at their home near Jesup...

Although the life or death decision was up to the jury, it fell to Judge Stephen Scarlett to set the order of the sentences and he ordered the life sentences to be served consecutively. He also sentenced Spell to 20 years each on the aggravated assault and aggravated battery convictions — both against Jeaney Harrison — that the jury delivered Saturday night...

Spell had killed three people July 31, 2007, but Scarlett directed a verdict of acquittal in the shooting death of Gary Aldine Harrison, 54, who was Jeaney Harrison’s husband and Amanda Spell’s father. The indictment was misworded on that count and would have almost certainly resulted in a reversal on appeal, District Attorney Jackie Johnson said.
