Moments after learning that Donnell Brown had been killed inside a Greenup Street apartment, the 56-year-old’s family said they knew who was to blame.

Hours later, Covington Police agreed.

Early Friday police arrested three people and charged them with killing, decapitating and dismembering Brown inside the green brick apartment at Greenup and Pleasant streets.

Covington Murder Victim Gave Money to Suspects

The family of a man whose dismembered body was found inside a Covington house on Thursday say they warned Donnell Brown to stay away from the suspects now charged with his death. 21 year old Austin Eash and 27 year old Tiffany Herrera are charged with murder, abuse of a corpse, tampering with evidence and theft in the death of the 57 year old Brown. A juvenile, whose name was not released, is also charged in the case, according to Covington Police.

Two weeks earlier the woman suspect applied for an emergency protection order saying he chased her with a knife. And in the application she described Brown as her "sugar daddy."

Different accounts given of Covington butchery
Suspects point fingers at each other

"Miss Herrera laid out the story that she initially cut him. He was still alive. She went and got Mr. Eash and a juvenile. They came back to the apartment and they agreed Mr. Brown needed to be finished off or killed," said Det. Brian Fuller.

At that moment Austin Eash squinted and shrugged as if to disagree with the detective's testimony and by extension Herrera's account of what happened.
"Miss Herrera gave testimony that Mr. Eash produced a knife, lifted Mr. Brown's head and cut his throat," continued Fuller.

Grisly testimony during hearing for Covington death, decapitation

Tiffany Herrera took a signet ring engraved with the word “dad” off the finger of the man she is accused of helping behead and gave it to her own father.

That is what Covington police Detective Brian Fuller testified to during a preliminary hearing of Herrera, 27, and her co-defendant, 21-year-old Austin Eash, on Tuesday in Kenton District Court.

Details of a brutal murder come out in court today and spark a reaction that sends someone else to jail. Those graphic details laid out how three people teamed up to slash, stab and dismember Donnell Brown and leave his mutilated body in a vacant apartment for three days.

I understand that the judge has to keep order in his courtroom. But this was a particularly gruesome and horrific murder. And I don't really blame the family for outbursts and anger. Since it was the first hearing and a horrific case I would think that kicking the person out would be enough. Even barring them from further attendance could be done. But the judge gave someone 10 days for their outburst.

It will probably go to a higher court now with a Judge who only handles felonies. That's what preliminary hearings are for, is to have a Judge to determine if there is enough evidence to prove a felony was committed.

They are very strict in the courtroom, no gum chewing, no facial expressions, no hugging, etc.

Yeah but I've known them to give less time for sexual assault.

That is cold.

When I first saw this I thought she was trying to show she was a loving daughter.

But then I thought about it. She took the ring off the man she called "sugar Daddy" and that she had relations with. The man she was allegedly involved with killing. It seems less like a loving daughter and more like a slap in the face and almost a warning.

uggh, awful case.

From January 2013:

Eash and Kolenda both said the trio originally planned to load Brown's body in a trash can then haul it with a truck to the river where they would dump it. After a day passed and they were unable to locate a truck, they decided to cut the body into pieces so it would fit in the trunk of a borrowed car.

The three began the task of cutting up the body and were almost finished when they realized it was getting light out and neighbors were on their way to school and work. The trio then decided to go use more drugs and wait for night fall before finishing their work. That afternoon, the landlord found the desecrated corpse and called police...

Eash agreed to a 15 year sentence for Facilitation of Murder, Theft, Tampering With Evidence and Abuse of a Corpse. Kolenda agreed to a 12 year sentence on the same charges. Both agreed to testify against Herrera. Faced with her co-defendants testimony against her, Herrera then agreed to plead guilty to Murder, Theft, Tampering With Evidence, and Abuse of a Corpse and serve 25 years in prison.
