And then there's bitter revenge.

A Skokie man has been charged with attempted murder for trying to kill his boss by filtering poisonous chemicals through his company's coffeepot for weeks, Cook County prosecutors said Friday.

Kemarat Vathananand, a pollution control operator at Schiller Park-based Castle Metal Finishing Corp., allegedly put lead acetate, sodium dimethyldithiocarbamate and urine in the coffeepots because he was angry at a vice president of the company who told him he could not drink coffee in the shop area, investigators said.

"He was upset with them because he was unable to drink coffee where he wanted,'' said Mike Marrazzo, a public information officer for Schiller Park Police.

A Cook County judge ordered Vathananand, 50, of Skokie held on a $100,000 bond. He has worked for the company for 15 years.

When employees of the company first noticed a bitter taste in the coffee three months ago, they bought new coffeepots, Marrazzo said.

When that didn't work, an employee took a sample from the coffeepot and ran his own test, said Tom Stanton, a spokesman for the state's attorney's office. The test came back positive for lead acetate, and employees called police.

Schiller Park Police installed a hidden camera at the company Oct. 19, and just over a week later, Vathananand was captured on tape pouring something into the coffee maker, Stanton said.
