Oregon rescue crews have suspended their search of a remote, mountainous part of southern Oregon for a Belleville native who went missing during a deer hunting trip two weeks ago.

Steve Litsey, 71, was last seen alive on Oct. 30, after splitting up from his hunting partner near Roseburg, Ore., about 125 miles north of the California border.

Authorities halted their search Nov. 3 after 7 inches of snow had fallen in the area.

Barbara Litsey of Belleville said she still hopes for the best, but is coming around to the idea that her older brother has passed away. She noted that the sub-freezing temperatures and heavy snows would have made survival extremely difficult.

"I've kind of given up now," she said. "It's really rough. He was my only sibling and my big brother ... I've kind of accepted the fact that he's gone."

Steve Litsey was reported missing by his hunting partner on Sunday, October 30, 2011. His friend told the Sheriff's Office that he and Litsey walked into the Twin Lakes area on Saturday, October 29, 2011 and then separated at about 0730 hours, agreeing to meet back there later in the day. Litsey never showed up.

Search and rescue crews from Oregon and California combed the area and found candy wrappers and water bottles, but weren't sure if they were from Litsey. As snow began to fall about 9 p.m. Wednesday, search efforts were called off.

It has been very, very cold in Oregon for the past few days. I'm up in the Portland metro, can't imagine how much colder it is in the mountains. I grew up in North Dakota and I've actually been uncomfortably cold while going to work the last few days, if that gives any perspective.

Answer Man: Was missing hunter ever found?

A couple of years ago, the BND ran a story about a former Belleville resident who had gone missing while hunting in Oregon. Was he ever found? -- H. M.

In late October 2011, Steve Litsey left his home in Paradise, Calif., to "worship" again in the rugged outdoors he loved so much.

But after splitting up with his deer-hunting partner in the mountainous terrain near Roseburg, Ore., he was never seen again. And, just this past summer, the court granted his wife Suzanne's petition to have the 71-year-old real estate agent declared dead as of Nov. 1, 2011.

"They never found any trace," said his sister, Barbara Litsey, who lives in the Signal Hill neighborhood. "He just loved the outdoors so much. He always told me that the wilderness where he went hunting was his church."

Details of Disappearance
Litsey was last seen in Diamond Lake, Oregon on October 29, 2011. He was on a deer hunting trip when he and his partner walked into the Twin Lakes area and separated at 7:30 a.m., agreeing to meet up later that day.

Litsey never arrived for their meeting and has never been heard from again. His partner reported him missing the next day. He left his cellular phone and GPS device in his camper.

An extensive search of the area turned up no sign of Litsey or the rifle he was carrying. Search efforts were hampered by inclement weather; there was a snowstorm in the area a few days after he disappeared. His case remains unsolved. His wife had him declared legally dead in 2013.

Stephen is still listed on Oregon's official missing persons page.
