CENTENNIAL, Colo. — A former Colorado lawman with a record so distinguished he was once honored as the nation's sheriff of the year now finds himself in a jail that was named for him, accused of offering methamphetamine in exchange for sex from a male acquaintance.

Patrick Sullivan, 68 — handcuffed, dressed in an orange jail uniform and walking with a cane — watched Wednesday as a judge raised his bail amount to a half-million dollars and sent him to the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility.

The current sheriff, Grayson Robinson, who worked as undersheriff for Sullivan from 1997 until he took over the job in 2002, said the department was shocked and saddened at his arrest.

The title of your thread actually made me laugh. Love it!

On a serious note, I am a proponent of naming buildings ONLY after the person to be honored is deceased. That way you don't have this problem.

that's really sad ... he's tarnished now

JFK airport wasn't named until he was gone.

Former sheriff Pat Sullivan charged with three felonies, one misdemeanor

Former Arapahoe County Sheriff Pat Sullivan, who was formally charged Friday in a drugs-for-sex case, in 2007 helped an acquaintance land a job at Cherry Creek Schools — a young man whose unexplained death earlier this year involved methamphetamine.

Sullivan had a relationship with Sean Moss as far back as mid-2007, when the longtime sheriff was still director of security at Cherry Creek Schools.
-------

He remained behind bars Friday on $500,000 bail, held in isolation in the jail that bears his name, the Patrick J. Sullivan Jr. Detention Facility.

He retired as sheriff in January 2003 after deciding not to seek a sixth term, then worked for six years as director of security at Cherry Creek Schools.

Prosecutors filed four formal charges against him on Friday......

Denver police are in the midst of an "active, open, ongoing" investigation of Moss' death, department spokesman Sonny Jackson said.

Meth addicts said former sheriff Pat Sullivan took care of them

http://www.denverpost.com/breakingnews/ci_19439677?source=pkg

CENTENNIAL — Authorities began investigating former Araphoe County Sheriff Patrick Sullivan after a Centennial man called police in September and said "an old guy" was trying to get his roommates back into drugs and had been smoking methamphetamine with them, according to a police report.

When the Centennial man asked Sullivan to leave and said he was going to call 911, Sullivan told the man "If you want the police I am the police," the man told officers.

Sullivan later told detectives he is on a meth drug task force and helps recovering addicts get clean, according to another report. He also said he worked for the state health department's drug treatment office.

None of it was true and they got him in a sting operation....

-------

Steve Ward, a former county commissioner who worked with Sullivan, said he "couldn't be more shocked."

Former Arapahoe County District Attorney Jim Peters, who worked with Sullivan, said the allegations against the former sheriff are "totally out of character" for the man he knew and are "hard to believe."

"He was completely ethical, upright and honest," Peters said. "He just oozed honesty and integrity. He was an outstanding sheriff."

Former sheriff's arrest in Colorado meth-for-sex case bewilders friends

http://www.denverpost.com/news/ci_19445308?obref=obnetwork

Former Arapahoe County Sheriff Patrick Sullivan's arrest in a meth-for-sex case left longtime law officers at a loss for words Wednesday, though court records paint a picture of a man who has been living a double life.

Sullivan, 68, remained behind bars in a jail that bears his name, accused of trading methamphetamine for sex with a man Tuesday, a transaction monitored by deputies working with a confidential informant. During a brief morning court appearance Wednesday, a judge doubled his bail to $500,000.

The arrest of the married father and grandfather sparked shock — even bewilderment — among longtime law officers.

"It's very, very distressing," said Colorado's U.S. marshal, John Kammerzell.

http://www.palmbeachpost.com/news/nation/bond-lowered-for-ex-lawman-in-meth-for-2013544.html

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — A former Colorado sheriff known for his crusade against youth drug use had his bond slashed Monday from $500,000 to $50,000 in a case accusing him of offering meth to a man in exchange for sex.
--------

"His public service is being used against him," McGreevy argued about the request by prosecutors for $500,000 bail. "Given the amount of good he's done, not just for Colorado but for Arapahoe County ... (I ask) that his bond be reduced to $50,000."

Prosecutor Karen Pearson opposed the move, citing community risk.

Sylvester acknowledged Sullivan's clean criminal record while lowering bail and placing conditions on his release. Sullivan was forbidden from having firearms or consuming alcohol or illegal drugs, and from harassing witnesses or victims in the case.

Sylvester also granted McGreevy's request for a gag order to prevent prosecutors and law enforcement from talking about the case.
-------

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Jan. 31, when Sylvester will decide if enough evidence exists to send Sullivan to trial.

Investigation deepens as Sullivan released from jail on bond

December 6, 2011

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. -- Former Arapahoe County Sheriff Patrick Sullivan was released on bond Tuesday afternoon, after a judge drastically reduced his bail.

Leaving the facility he'd built while sheriff, Sullivan ignored reporters' questions and walked to the waiting SUV driven by an unidentified woman who'd come to pick him up.

Investigators from multiple law enforcement agencies are looking into Sullivan's activities surrounding drugs, a gay meth club and party scene, and prostitution and solicitation, going back years.

Sullivan's service as Cherry Creek Schools security director is also under investigation, amid charges he helped hire men with criminal records who were using meth.

Including Sean Moss, who was found drowned last January in Denver
