That does change things a bit. Not for the kids, because they didn't have a choice.

I wonder if the mother knew when she left the kids home alone with him. Even if you deal out of a nice, safe, suburban neighborhood, that doesn't mean that someone won't eventually come after you. Drug dealing is not a pretty or safe business, by any means.

From this link, it sounds like the mom may have thought something was going on, but wasn't sure.

"Sheriff's deputies later spoke with Lopez's wife, Marie Lopez, who said she suspected he might have been involved with selling drugs. They discovered a false bottom to a kitchen cabinet that contained several clear glass jars of what appeared to be marijuana, according to the records."

I'm relieved the kids were uninjured. Surprised actually. Shame on people for involving their kids in these things. I mean really, dealing drugs out of your home with your kids there.

Amber Thornton pleaded guilty to lesser charges and agreed to testify against Facundo and Escobar. She was sentenced to 50 years in prison.

Joseph Facundo and Tony Escobar were both found guilty. Facundo was sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. Escobar was sentenced to life in prison. Since he was 17 at the time of the murder, he will be eligible for parole after 40 years. He appealed his conviction last year and it was denied.

The opinion from the court of appeals has more information on Escobar's trial as well as the brutal murder of Russell Lopez.
